What's on TV?: Friday, June 2, 1967

We're back with the Minnesota State Edition, for a wholly unremarkable day of television. As you know if you've read these in the past, that's not meant as a criticism; it just means there's nothing out of the ordinary on, save that James Bond special. But in fact that's what television was like most of the time - your regular shows, just the way you like them.

A few years after this issue, it would be almost impossible to see a black-and-white movie on network television, but fortunately that mentality hadn't yet come along, which is why a drama like "Two for the Seesaw" is on the CBS Friday Night Movie.

Check out her Wikipedia page; she lived a rather remarkable life.

This is a good example of KCMT's dual affiliations in action. In addition to their regular NBC programming, they have General Hospital, Hoppity Hooper and Batman in today's afternoon lineup. When I lived in the area, they managed to include almost the entire ABC Saturday morning schedule across the afternoon timeslots.

  1. I have a copy of the EVERYBODY'S TALKING episode listed for today, and it's likely on YouTube now. The show had recently added celebrities to play for home audience members apparently to add ratings appeal. Roger Smith had recently married Ann-Margret and remained married to her for the rest of his life, about 50 years, as I think he died just last year. There were a few laughs in this one when Godfrey Cambridge drew a post card from a Mississippi viewer. Wink Martindale didn't host this show, but he was the announcer, and he appeared on-camera in this episode briefly.

HOLLYWOOD SQUARES from Monday of this week, May 29 (51 years ago today), is on YouTube. It's a B&W kinescope w/ bad sound, but it's still fun to watch. Peter Marshall specifically mentioned that Joanne Dru was his sister. i don't think she appeared again until NBC was experimenting with hour-long shows around 1975 and rotated some celebrities in & out during these shows.

WKBT also carried ABC's NEWLYWED GAME after GENERAL HOSPITAL. Both of these shows were still in B&W at the time, so it's possible that the station just ran B&W kinescopes of these shows unless it could videotape the programs directly from ABC.

  2. Was "Color Bar" at 8:50 am on Channel 10 what I suspect it was? Ten minutes of a color test pattern to adjust the color on your TV?

  3. Did the United Network (producers/distributors of "The Las Vegas Show") even last long enough to see June 2nd, 1967; the date of these listings?

Given that TV Guide listings had to be "locked-in" two or three weeks in advance of printing, it's possible that the show may already have gone off-the-air by the time June 2nd rolled around.

Note that in Minnesota, the show was carried by two CBS affiliates. Since CBS was the only network at the time not feeding programs after 11 P.M. Eastern (10 Central), it would have made a lot of sense for CBS stations to pick-up this show.

Had the United Network gone into prime-time and daytime programming, could there have been a "split" affiliation in some cities where an independent station might have ran the prime-time and/or daytime programs, whereas the CBS affiliate continued to carry the "Las Vegas Show"?

  4. I think the official end of the United Network was May 31st. If there was a Las Vegas program on the schedule past that it might have been electronically delayed. I believe the Indianapolis affiliate delayed the show by two days (airing Wednesday night-Sunday night). That's as much as I remember.

  5. Where is the 9:00 PM (CT) show (Laredo) on the NBC affils?

  6. It was not uncommon for ABC stations to run Saturday and Sunday kids shows during weekdays morning slots in a checkerboard schedule back then.
