You'll notice in the picture above that ABC has The Ghost and Mrs. Muir scheduled for 7:30 p.m., but this would have been preempted for the seventh game of the NBA finals, which we read about on Saturday. Coverage started at 6:30 p.m. CT, and I figured it would probably have run until about 9:00 p.m. including the trophy presentation; since Love, American Style was scheduled to run from 9:00 to 10:00, I took the liberty of assuming ABC would have left that in place rather than borrowing one of their shows from earlier in the evening. (In case you're interested, the programs that were preempted in favor of basketball were The Flying Nun, The Brady Bunch, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, and an ABC news special on the American handyman.)
One last sports note: WDSM, Channel 6 in Duluth, is shown as joining the Twins-Indians game in progress, about five minutes late. If that's really true, they probably only missed a few batters. Today, the way they play the game, after five minutes the lead-off man is probably still at bat.

Thanks for choosing this date for your weekly highlight, and I hope you had a happy 10th birthday back then. You've helped clear up a point of confusion that I've had for awhile in my research on BRADY BUNCH reruns, for which I've used both TV GUIDE and local newspaper listing archives. TV GUIDE and local newspapers (which I consulted to double-check TV GUIDE) had ABC rerunning "Mike's Horror-Scope", which was one of the weirdest and maybe worst episodes of the series, both May 8 & July 17. I was confused why ABC did this until you pointed out here that ABC wiped out most of its programming on May 8 due to Game 7 of the NBA Playoffs, so it rescheduled this episode for July 17. Unfortunately ABC denied any summer rerun at all for "Is There a Doctor in the House", which was a fun episode that featured both the past Henry Mitchell from DENNIS THE MENACE (Herbert Anderson) and the future Mrs. C of HAPPY DAYS (Marion Ross) as the kids' 2 (he for the boys, she for the girls) doctors.
ReplyDeleteI see that you have Jo Ann Pflug listed as a celebrity on IT TAKES TWO, which had celebrity couples create averages for audience contestants to guess which average was the closest. She likely appeared with her future husband Chuck Woolery, who was not as well-known as she was at the time, as this was 5 years before the premiere of WHEEL OF FORTUNE. I haven't heard of anything new that Jo Ann Pflug has done since Markie Post replaced her on THE FALL GUY some 30+ years ago.
I wonder which city's residents she was playing for...
Delete(that was the format...remotes from different NBC affiliates. The only episode out there to be seen had its audience in New Orleans)
That NBA game that you made reference to, Mitchell, was Game 7 of the NBA Championship series, now known simply as the NBA Finals. This was one of, if not, the greatest NBA finals game 7's in NBA history. The backstory to the game is that Willis Reed, the Knicks, center had suffered a deep thigh injury (torn muscle)in game 5. This injury kept him out of game 6 as the Knicks lost. Before the game 7, there was speculation whether or not Willis Reed would start or even play game 7. Willis was give some shots of hydrocortisone just before the game. Willis then enters the playing court to a standing ovation before tip-off. When the game was played, Willis made his first two shots of the game, which would be his only points of the game. But it didn't matter, fueled by the play of Walt "Clyde" Fraizer, scoring 36 points, 19 rebounds, the Knicks handily defeated the Lakers 113-99.
ReplyDeleteSome things about the game. Doing play-by-play was Chris Shenckel, who was then known tho New Yorkers in the '50s and '60s as the voice of the NY Giants football team, he would get greater fame for Hosting the Professional Bowlers Tour on ABC. Jack Twyman who did color on the game, was the former forward for the Rochester/Cincinnati Royals (now Sacramento Kings). He became the legal guardian to his teammate Maurice Stokes after Stokes had become paralyzed during a game. Twyman took care of Stokes until his death in 1970. For a good film about both Twyman and Stokes in recommend the 1973 film Maurie (AKA Big MO) featuring the Late Bernie Casey as Stokes and Bo Svenson as Twyman. Interviewing the Knicks in the dressing room after the game was none other than Howard Cosell. Cosell was brought in to give the game an added gravitas. Cosell was actually humbled by the play of Reed telling him "You exemplify the very best that the human spirit can offer."
A couple of other things. If I recall correctly, this game was blacked out to the New York City market, it was aired after EYEWITNESS NEWS on WABC-TV channel 7 at 11:30 pm. Likely what happened was that Channel 7 had to air a film in place of the game to protect the Knicks gate reciepts, some thing that no network would even allow these days. Watching the game you will notice that it was far than flashy. Graphics were few, no annoying sound effects, announcers complemented the action rather than detract from it, and rap would not be heard for at least another decade or so. Also there was no showboating, everybody played their game and played it well. This is the type of game I wish the NBA could return to.
I presume that "Newlyweds" on ABC at 1 P.M. Central was actually the long-running "Newlywed Game".
ReplyDeleteA "big three" network affiliate in a major market (KMSP Channel 9) only running a half-hour late local news and no midday or early-evening newscasts?
ReplyDelete(I presume "News And Views" at 7:30 A.M. was more of a public-affairs program than a "straight" newscast)
When you're the ABC affiliate, you may not have the resources for much news coverage.
