What's on TV? Friday, August 26, 1966

T
his week we're in western New York, thanks to John Rowe, the source of this week's TV Guide, who replied earlier in the year to an appeal for issues to fill some gaps. John's not only a loyal and faithful reader, he's also contributed his knowledge and insights, as well as his share of TV Guides.

We haven't been outside Minnesota much lately, which goes for the Hadleys personally as well as our TV Guide; just as this changes with this week's issue, it also changes for us next month, as we'll be in Maryland for the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention, where I'll not only be lecturing on TV Guide and promoting my new book, I may even be picking up a few more issues for next year. In the meantime though, enjoy this one and see if you recognize any of your favorites.

  1. Specifics for a summer night:

    - Tonight's a Lloyd Bochner Fest!
On Wild Wild West, Bochner has the title role in "The Night Of The Puppeteer", one of that show's early forays into out-and-out surrealism (and this is still when The Avengers was only starting to get known Stateside).
… And later that same evening …
Bochner turns up on Honey West, as a crooked insurance man who's masterminding a major museum heist.
Some things never change, I guess …

    - Summer Fun was ABC's version of 'Failure Theater', unsold pilots for your amusement.
Tonight's 'No Sale' is The Pirates Of Flounder Bay, set in Colonial times, about a would-be buccaneer who can't quite pull off the menace part of it.
Bill Cort, one of the blandest actors of his generation, has the lead here; his crew includes Jack Soo, Charlie Dierkop (you'd definitely know the face), and Burt Mustin; also in the cast are Keenan Wynn as Captain Jack Slash and Hal Peary as the local mayor.
And Special Guest Star - Basil Rathbone as the Colonial Governor.
There reputedly exists a blooper from this episode: Rathbone gets up to address a banquet in his honor - and before he can say anything, out comes one of the great belches in recorded film history.
Never saw that, sorry to say; also never saw the pilot, which somehow hasn't been included on any of the DVD collections of such shows that occupy a place of pride on my DVD Wall - still, I live in hope …

    - Man From UNCLE, still in farce mode, offers "The Round Table Affair", in which a toy duchy is slated for a takeover by The Mob, under the supervision of Lucho Nostra (quick - before checking back, see if you can guess who's playing Mr. Nostra).

    - Local notes:
    - Channel 9 has a White Sox night game from Comiskey Park, playing the Twins.
This is immediately preceded by The Ray Rayner Theatre, showing Laurel & Hardy in Sons Of The Desert. (Insert your own joke here.)
    - Meanwhile, newly-minted UHF Channel 32 is still feeling its way.
Bill Veeck is still doing his five-night-a-week talk show at 10:30 pm.
Tonight's topic is the Peace Corps; for what it's worth, none of Bill's shows this week (in the middle of the baseball season) have anything to do with baseball.

    1. After I stood down, I suddenly remembered something:

In a few weeks, Amazon will make available another of those unsold pilot collections I love so much.
This one is supposed to include the 1959 Nero Wolfe pilot with Kurt Kasznar and William Shatner, which was supposedly all set for CBS until Rex Stout personally stopped the project.
In the domain of Unsold TV, this is one of the Holy Grails - and my order is in (it's supposed to drop in mid-September).
      Just so you know …

    2. My first guess at Mr. Nostra was Bruce Gordon, the go-to mobster of the day. What do I win? :) Gordon was a few weeks away from spoofing his image on RUN, BUDDY, RUN. Not the first time he'd done it---he was a riot in a memorable CAR 54 that had Gunther Toody unwittingly joining the mob.

    3. Congratz, Hal! Your No-Prize isn't in the mail …

Well into his 90s, Bruce Gordon was still doing autograph shows, resplendent in a pearl-gray suit with matching tie and homburg, and toy machine-gun for photo ops.
I recall one Chicago show where Bruce Gordon had a fond reunion with Paul Picerni (RIP to both men).
Those definitely were the days …

    4. Dierkopf was one of Angie Dickinson's fellow cops on POLICE WOMAN, wasn't he?

  2. I was hoping to see WWNY-7 Watertown NY and CKWS-11 Kingston ON.

    1. I'm not sure about CKWS, but WWNY had split off to the E NY State Edition, along with the stations from my native NY Capital District (Albany/Schenectady) and WKTV in Utica, in Sept 1965, when the NY State Edition split into East & West editions. The ENYS Edition no longer had the Rochester stations but it eventually included the stations from Burlington VT/Plattsburgh NY.

  3. The Guide was always conflicted about what to do with Central New York where I lived. Syracuse was always a constant but each week when the mail came, we never knew if we were getting the Western NY or Eastern NY Guide.

In the Finger Lakes, we could get Syracuse and, if I turned the antenna north (with the help of my dad's monkey wrench locked onto the pole), we could easily get WWNY from Watertown and CKWS from Kingston, ON. On a clear evening, CJOH from Ottawa would boom in...all handy for Hockey Night in Canada and CFL football...
