What's on TV? Friday, December 3, 1965

One of the things about going back and forth in the 1960s is seeing the evolution of color television. As you can see in today's listing, most of the color programming still belongs to NBC (not surprising given their relationship with RCA), although Hogan's Heroes is and always was broadcast in color, and The Farmer's Daughter has made the transition for its final season. Other nights do offer more colorcasts; Andy Griffith, Lucy, My Favorite Martian, and The Hollywood Palace to name just a few. Yet when you look at last week, everything is in color. Next week, almost everything will be in black-and-white. Keeps me alert, anyway. At least we know this week's listings come from the Minnesota State Edition.

  1. This Guide, along with the Fall 1965 season, was a seminal event in my life, simply because, 1) NBC, most of ABC and much of CBS went all color for the first time (ABC and CBS trying to keep up with the peacock no doubt) and 2) as a 12 year old hooked on TV and the AFL, the world of color now resided in our house thanks to my father springing for a 25" Motorola. Ah, if only I still had my Fall Preview 1965 Guide...Great analysis of this issue, Mitchell.

  2. ...and WEAU choosing to preempt "Hank" for an earlier late 50's early 60's classic B/W "Donna Reed" yet keeping "Camp Runamuck " in the lineup seems anachronistic..something against poor, hardworking college students in Eau Claire???

    1. Donna's show was in its' final season of first run episodes, although ABC also had the program in daytime reruns. WEAU could have pre-empted one of NBC's morning soap operas to carry it, but didn't. What u should complain about is the fact they didn't carry Johnny Carson's Tonight Show!

    2. I don't have that edition of that TV Guide issue, but the episode that WEAU-TV ran on this date was most likely the first-run ABC episode aired the night before on most ABC stations. This is also likely because the La Crosse/Eau Claire tv market had no full-time ABC affiliate until WXOW-TV signed on from La Crosse in 1970, so WEAU-TV & WKBT-TV both had secondary ABC affilations until 1970.

  3. Peter Falk and Joanna Barnes were lawyer and ex-wife on THE TRIALS OF O'BRIEN.

Thar night's FLINTSTONES featured the Stone Age versions of the pop music show SHINDIG, host Jimmy O'Neill, and the rock band the Beau Brummels.

  4. Thanks, Ken and John. I must have lost track of The Donna Reed Show when it switched to ABC (WNYS Ch. 9 in Syracuse) because the signal wasn't strong and I had probably lost interest at that point. And, yes, Ken. How do they not run Carson in late 1965??

    1. You're very welcome, Ken. THE DONNA REED SHOW was on ABC for its entire primetime run 1958-66, but it does seem like a completely different show in its later years, so you may not have missed it by then. I was an infant at the time so I wouldn't have watched these shows, but I know that NBC's Capital District affiliate, WRGB-TV out of Schenectady, carried neither CAMP RUNAMUCK nor HANK from NBC ever, preempting them for THE LITTLE RED SCHOOLHOUSE (a local quiz show) and DEATH VALLEY DAYS (which I do remember, at least its sponsor, 20-Mule Team Borax). WRGB-TV apparently hated college kids AND summer camp kids. :)
