What's on TV? Thursday, June 25, 1964

It's always nice to be back in New York. This is a little earlier edition than we've looked at in the past, so we have fewer channels in the lineup. It's an entertaining day—but then, I've been known to find strange things entertaining. Let's see what we can find.

That movie on the Late, Late Show, Interns Can't Take Money, sounds as if it should be one of those madcap pictures from the '30s, doesn't it? Guess again: the cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Joel McCrea, and Lloyd Nolan, and McCrea plays the young intern, fella name of Dr. James Kildare. It's the only time playing the role for McCrea, but don't worry—as a matter of fact, we'll meet two of his successors tonight.

That 1:00 p.m. movie, The Hasty Heart, part 4? It concludes tomorrow,  Interesting idea, splitting the movie up into five half-hour segments. It's an hour and 42 minutes, or 102 minutes which means 48 minutes of commercials, or nearly ten minutes out of each half-hour. Hard to get any kind of momentum going, I'd think.

Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim, actor Robert Horton, Carol Lawrence, who appeared in the Broadway production of West Side Story (lyrics by Stephen Sondheim), and professional legend Lauren Bacall.

  1. The movie in 5 parts seems like a silly idea agreed, but if you look at the other CBS station, they put Leave it to Beaver in the middle of 4 soap operas, what a weird gap in the network programming to fill.

  2. I'm trying to imagine Clint Eastwood playing Charades.

    1. Eric Fleming & Paul Brinigar were also in the cast of RAWHIDE. STUMP THE STARS was a very tough form of charades, from what I've seen. The teams had 2 minutes to guess a long phrase, which usually seemed to be stretched out of a couple shorter phrases.

    2. History Time:

On Stump The Stars (formerly Mike Stokey's Pantomime Quiz), what they did were jokes - usually involving wordplay, which would have been hard enough if they just tried to say them aloud.
Having to mime the words of the jokes is what made the game chaotic - and (most of the time) funnier.
When Stump The Stars was on CBS that year, the network prevailed upon producer Stokey to book their series stars for promo purposes; The one sample I've got in the DVD wall was the night that the Perry Mason cast showed up (it's on the Mason 50th Anniversary DVD).
For the CBS STS, Stokey had his guest dress formally - and I'd love to see Eastwood, Eric Fleming, and especially old Paul Brinegar, all in tuxes and black tie for the occasion.
Since Rawhide had no female cast members, one of the listed ladies would have been the drovers's designated teammate for the game.
This would most likely have been Diana Dors, the only non-regular lady in the group that night (it should be noted here that this was a syndicated rerun from about a year before, when Miss Dors was still married to the then-still-owlish Dickie Dawson).
Now there's a picture - grizzled old Wishbone and the voluptuous Dors, dressed for the Senior Prom - those were the daze!

  3. WNEW airing two hours of WWE (then the WWWF) and the same station airs WWE again for two hours every week (also aired WWF TV from 1987-1996 as well and briefly WXO in 2000). Fox 5 has a great history with pro wrestling from Dumont Wrestling to WWWF Heavyweight Wrestling to WWF SuperStars and Challenge to WXO and finally airing WWE Friday Night SmackDown.
