TV
WSNL has an interesting history, if Wikipedia is at all accurate. It signed on in 1973 to super-serve Long Island, with LI-focused news, kids' shows, and even a locally produced soap opera. It went off the air in 1975, but was reborn later on for a year or so, eventually becoming home to a subscription TV service. Article here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WFTY-DT
ReplyDeleteWWHT for Womeco Home Thearter an over the air scrambled movie channel, then it became a would be MTV 24 hour video station.
ReplyDelete"NewsCenter4" (on at 5, 6 and 11) debuted on April 29, 1974, and in the early edition replaced "Movie 4" which had run under that title since 1957 and was the first "4:30 movie" show beginning in 1965 (preceding WCBS' "The Early Show" by a matter of months in that time slot, and WABC by nearly three years). Its demise (though weekend editions of "Movie 4" ran in the afternoons through 1977) led to WNBC losing the rights to titles in the "Universal 123" film package they had had since 1967, including a few where select titles in the package (such as Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" and "A Man Could Get Killed") had their first airings in the 1968-70 period on WABC (some on their "Big Show"/"4:30 Movie"). Those that WABC held outright (including "Harvey," "Munster, Go Home" and the original 1962 "Cape Fear") stayed at the station; the ones WNBC used to run, by this time, were picked up by WPIX which would air films from the package to at least the end of the decade. ("That Touch of Mink" was also originally part of "Universal 123," aired once on WABC in 1969 and then on WNBC on and off through 1971; but after it was yanked from that package and put together with other Cary Grant films in a package assembled by NTA, it returned to WABC in 1972 and ran there for several years.)
ReplyDeleteWNBC also lost the rights to Viacom's "Features I" package that contained a group of films starring Elvis Presley that, in October 1972, led to the station putting together the first-ever "Elvis Week" on "Movie 4" (WABC started an "Elvis and Beatles Week" around that same time period on "The 4:30 Movie," with three Elvis films in their library interspersed with the two Beatles flicks they had back then, "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help!"); that package then went for the next several years to WNEW where they would be a companion to Viacom's follow-up "Features II" which Channel 5 had already snapped up.
WNBC's film library, of the major stations, was already the smallest of them all; these losses all but finished them as a significant movie showcase (on weeknights, all that was left was "The Great Great Show" which aired after "Tomorrow" by this point).
(To fill the 4:30 slot after "Movie 4" was cancelled, that's where "Room 222" reruns come in.)
