What's on TV? Sunday, November 10, 1968

Ah, the good old Sundays, with the NFL on CBS, and the AFL on NBC. The Giants were playing the Cowboys, just as they were as I was typing this last sentence. (Without the black cat, though.) One thing that strikes me about this time is looking at the interview shows like Meet the Press. This week, the guests are the Apollo 7 astronauts; nowadays, they hardly have anyone outside of the political arena.

This week's listings are from the Twin Cities; no KTCA, as the educational channel doesn't yet broadcast on the weekend.

That 5:30 news special about where to locate the major airport in the Twin Cities? We've been talking about that for decades, and despite all that talking, no new airport has ever been built. We just keep expanding the existing MSP, more and more and more. The city of Richfield, where I used to live, has neighborhoods closer to the runway than at any other major airport in the country.

Ah, Notre Dame football highlights, with Lindsey Nelson and Paul Hornung! Just seeing it there makes me want to move to further listings, and if you ever watched Notre Dame Football on Sunday mornings, you'll get that joke. TV

  1. Hmm...KSTP has a MY MOTHER THE CAR rerun followed by a documentary on LSD. There has to be a joke there somewhere.

I'd love to see a BEAUTIFUL PHYLLIS DILLER SHOW someday. It has to exist in a warehouse somewhere.

I'm pretty sure "Lad: a Dog" (from KMSP) became the featured sheepdog a few years later on PLEASE DON'T EAT THE DAISIES.

    1. You're not the only one who saw a connection between the My Mother the Car rerun and the LSD documentary. I've often thought the fact the former show made it onto NBC's schedule was proof there was a lot of acid going around the TV industry in 1965.

    2. I just remembered that on MTM SHOW, WJM-TV had MMtC on its schedule (as an in-joke as co-creator Allan Burns also co-created MMtC). It really was rerun in the Twin Cities, for awhile anyway, just not on WJM-TV.

  2. Here & There (& Beyond …):

    - Noting that Face The Nation is covering a teachers union strike in New York City, showing the NYcentricity of the Networks, even as late as '68.
Most of the working comedians of that era were based in Manhattan, as was Johnny Carson's show (even though they were spending the sweeps in Hollywood that week).
I'm old enough to remember that NYC's political figures were regularly featured in Carson's monologues - among them the boss of the teachers union, a belligerent man named Albert Shanker …
... and if you remember that name, you're old enough to remember when Woody Allen was actually somewhat popular …

    - Since (as usual) you neglected to include details of dramatic episodes, I'll mention here that this week's Mission: Impossible is one of their classics: "The Execution", wherein the IMF has to convince a mob hit man that he's going to the gas chamber in a couple of hours (after having lost all memory of the previous several years) - unless of course he rats out the Big Boss.
As an incentive, they make him watch as Martin Landau gets the full-dress gas job.
Never let it be said that good old Marty didn't give his all for his art …

    - Ed Sullivan doesn't have Topo Gigio on tonight, but this seems to be as good a place as any to note that Maria Perego, TG's creator, just passed away in Italy, aged 95.
From the obit, I gather that Topo Gigio was always popular in his native land, and that Sra. Perego was planning new projects for him (including a feature film) right up to the end.

    - I probably should have put these up in the previous post, but What The Hey:
    - Friday's Gomer Pyle has a story about a foreign actress who wants to marry an American so she won't be deported.
You might want to check the listing to see who's playing the foreign actress …

    - And as long as I'm making you check listings, look at Tuesday's NYPD, about Jack Warden and Robert Hooks investigating the shooting of a bigoted white Southerner, with the more-or-less expected results.
Once again, I call your attention to the cast list (and yes, I really want you to look this up - purely for your own edification, of course …).

    1. I noticed the NYC-Centricity of Carson's show when I watched the New Year's Eve show 12/31/65-1/1/66. John Lindsey was about to be sworn in as NYC's new mayor in the morning, and labor leader Mike Quill was planning to start a transit strike the same day. A good part of the monologue was about their projected fight, and Carson even showed some silent film to satirize the conflict. I read that the strike went on for a couple weeks at least, and Quill died later that same month, why I don't recall.

  3. On my Richard Vernadeau channel on YouTube I have a series called 1960s Channel Hopping where you can vicariously relive some of what aired back int he good old days...
