What's on TV? Thursday, February 4, 1960

Here's something I haven't encountered in a TV Guide before: the stations are listed in descending order. Maybe some of you collectors have seen this, but it's a first for me, and let me tell you, it's a bit disconcerting when it comes to keeping track of things. We persevere, though. Part of the reason I chose to spotlight today is that it gives us a chance to see some programs we don't ordinarily run across; in addition to the Chevalier show I mentioned on Saturday, we've got Johnny Staccato, the jazz detective series starring John Cassavetes, Betty Hutton's eponymous sitcom, and Pat Boone's prime time show, when he was the youngest star ever to host his own variety show. And speaking of sitcoms, at 7:00 p.m. on WHEN, The Phil Silvers Show features one of the most famous episodes in TV history: Bilko being called upon to defend a chimpanzee in a court-martial.

The listings come from the Binghamton issue.

  1. A classic from my old stomping grounds. I'm sure at the precocious age of 6, I was glued to the two Syracuse stations waiting anxiously for Fridays at 7:30 to watch the Flintstones on WSYR. Both stations carried ABC programming up until September 1962 when the full ABC affiliate (WNYS-Channel 9)went on the air and we could watch the AFL in all of its B&W snowy grandeur. The first show aired on 9 was the debut of "The Jetsons."

Ironically, smaller cities like Binghamton (no added "p" pleasse) and Scranton-Wilkes Barre had all three networks represented by local stations before larger cities like Rochester and Syracuse got them two years later. Then again, smaller cities were original meccas of UHF opportunities based on shifting FCC regs.

Channel 18 in Elmira was a repeater for WSYR.

  2. The Hazleton/Williamsport Edition of the early 1960s, which also included the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre stations, also listed the stations in reverse order on the Channels Listed page. You can see an example of that edition here: http://www.matthewsittel.com/tvg/cl/19621110_hzw_cl.jpg

  3. About Faces on WNEP(16) was hosted by the same Ben Alexander who played Jack Webb's partner on Dragnet; let's not forget that Search For Tomorrow was paired during that time with Guiding Light(not listed).
