What's on TV? Saturday, March 14, 1970

We're in the Big Apple again this week, and I enjoy these trips to New York, having never been there in person myself. You don't see the variety of local programming on Saturday that you see the rest of the week, but I always like to see what's on Saturdays, the best day of the week. You'll notice that Channel 8, WNHC, has a lot of high school basketball; it's the Connecticut state high school basketball tournament, with different regions based on the enrollment size. You'll also see that WNDT, the NET affiliate in NYC (now WNET, one of the larger and more influential PBS stations in the country) has college hockey on. If I'd had the opportunity, I might have watched that; I always have been a sucker for sports on educational television.

  1. I see that a couple movies where Dick York appeared aired today. WNHC aired "They Came to Cordura", and Mr. York suffered the back injury that affected the rest of his life while filming it, and WOR aired "Inherit the Wind", where he played school teacher, Bert Cates.

  2. Wow, the Independent stations had far better programming Saturday night than the Networks. Saturday nights were worse then than they are now.

  3. Apparently the listing for the New York "It's Academic" (slight misspelling there in the listing) did not list the competing schools that day (full disclosure: I'm the honorary historian of the show).

  4. Looks like the Gleason show aired a repeat of the "Color Honeymooners" episode "To Whom It May Concern," on which Paul Ford played his boss. (It was a remake of a 1953 "lost" episode, "Letter to the Boss.")
