Don't have the issue, but I do have some odd memories:
ReplyDelete- In Game Show Land, I'll make the guess that Mike Connors would be mentioning his forthcoming CBS series Mannix , which was to debut that fall.
If memory serves (and most likely it doesn't), Connors had a feature out at that time that he would be plugging (which nobody remembers anyway).
- Similarly, Peter Falk's appearance on Hollywood Squares would predate the production of Prescription: Murder (making it pre-Columboan?).
What a difference a generation (or two) makes …
- The mention of Dream Girl Of '67, Chuck Barris's version of a beauty pageant:
The three male celebrity guests here were judges, putting in a week at a time looking at the young ladies.
The female guest was there to host the fashion segment.
And so it went; needless to say, there was no Dream Girl Of '68.
- I recall this week's Danny Kaye Show: they did a book musical play, "Giovanni's Wedding", based on a running sketch from that season in which Danny played an old Italian tailor who'd come to the States to live with his son and daughter-in-law.
Over the course of the season, Giovanni met and courted a shy widow, building up to this full-hour play, which was played mainly seriously (heartstrings all the way).
The music and lyrics were the work of Billy Barnes, who was the special musical material guy for the Kaye Show; the following season, Barnes moved over to Laugh-In, filling that same function for that show's entire run.
I was a snotty 16-year-old back then, but I liked it.
- One network over, NBC's I Spy had an episode that I must have caught on a rerun.
In "Night Train To Madrid", Culp & Cosby are escorting a mini-USO troupe with nasty comic Don Rickles, three bullied showgirls, and a genial Soviet agent; murder ensues …
Tight little whodunit; I was just getting into that genre myself, and I liked this too.
- By the bye, I just checked the program log for Dark Shadows.
On this date, Barnabas Collins was a month away from being introduced on the show.
The main villain was Dennis Patrick as Jason McGuire, a sleazy blackmailer who was making everybody miserable in the more traditional soapy ways; eventually, he got his - but that's another story …
