What's on TV? Friday, July 24, 1953

There's not much to report today; I mentioned the addition of the Milwaukee listing for WTMJ on Saturday, and appropriately enough I've listed it after all the Chicago stations, just as it was in the issue. Besides, when you have the following, you don't need anything more. It's the description for Double Crossed Fool, the movie at 3:00 p.m. on WBKB: "Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito run into American sailors when they go to an island to make a treaty with the native chief."* According to the always-reliable Wikipedia, it's also known as That Natzy Nuisance, and it's a sequel to The Devil with Hitler. It's a comedy, in case you hadn't guessed, and while it sounds as if it should star the Three Stooges, it doesn't. I'll let you take it from there.

*"Hitler, Mussolini, and Hirohito walk into a bar. . ."

There's a note preceding the Milwaukee listings that they're in Central Standard Time. Now, we've discussed the checkered history of Daylight Saving Time before, and I don't pretend to know what things were like then in Chicago, but it might well be that Chicago is observing DST; hence, the mention that Milwaukee is not. But life is confusing enough as it is without having to figure this out as well.

  1. Bet you'll never guess which 2 panelists on that night's airing of Pantomime Quiz are still alive; given the recent spate of celeb deaths, here's hoping we can hang on to them a little while longer.

    1. I just spent a bunch of time and effort on a comment that this oedipusrexing machine ate up.

  3. OK, trying again:

    - First thing I noticed was that listing for "That Nazty Nuisance", which is the title on my c2c DVD, where it sits beside its prequel, "The Devil With Hitler".
I spent a good chunk of Monday watching them both.
These were "Streamliners" from Hal Roach, running 42 minutes each; Roach was phasing out two-reel comedies, and this was their compromise for double features with hour-and-a-quarter movies.
Check the listing, and you'll see that Channel 7 was giving "Nuisance" a 55-minute slot, which meant that the movie was possibly uncut, with 12 minutes of ad time available.

    - Check the listings and you'll find that most of the movies that were available to local stations in '53 were Bs from Poverty Row, side by side with short comedies and serial episodes; this is how I became a Movie Buff, from reading the credits at the start of the pictures - and noticing how many of the names were turning up on the newer TV series I was seeing at night.

    - That feature in the color section about "Stars of Old TV Movies" illustrates my point above, with an added kicker for today.
The big photo depicts Gail Patrick, who several years afterward was recruited by her husband to be the 'showrunner' for a new TV series about the popular lawyer/detective Perry Mason (but that's another story …).

    - Double Play With Day And Durocher on Channel 7 was a syndicated pickup geared to the season.
Leo Durocher was managing the New York Giants that season; he'd just gotten married to movie star Laraine Day, and they were cashing in.
The marriage was short-lived: lapsed Catholic Durocher and devout Mormon Day were a major mismatch from the beginning.
By the way, check the letter column for a disgruntled viewer who was upset over Leo & Laraine replacing his favorite show, Tales Of Tomorrow.
    Some things never change …

    - I had a couple of other things in my earlier comment, but they'll keep, I guess … at least until I see if this one gets through.

  4. How does an affiliate with more than one network decide what to run? I know it partially has something to do with whether a sponsor sells products in that city, but there's probably more to it than that
