What's on TV? Sunday, December 17, 1972

When you live in the Pacific time zone, football Sunday gets off to an early start, as you can see from this week's Bay Area listings. I've been to San Francisco a couple of times, and I never could get used to live events starting so early—and, conversely, taped prime time programs ending at 11:00 p.m. instead of 10:00. I think Central time is just ingrained in me. And speaking of prime time, does anyone else remember when CBS and ABC used to have the late Sunday news? I remember seeing it late night, just before sign-off , but these stations show it ahead of or instead of the late local news. Trust me though: there's more to these listings than the late news.

  1. A Question From The Back Row:

Noting that Channel 3 in Sacramento is running The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes at 10:30 pm, in between Night Gallery and the Johnny Carson rerun.
I don't know how familiar you might be with this show, which was in first-run syndication in the US this season.
Here in Chicago, WGN-Channel 9 ran Rivals Friday evening at 7 PM - at least in the early going (but that's another story ...).

The Rivals Of Sherlock Holmes was an anthology series, concerned with fictional detectives who were popular in British magazines and newspapers at the turn of the 20th Century.
Sir Hugh Greene, who'd just retired as Director-General of the BBC, edited several hardcover collections of such stories, which sold well enough in GB to attract television interest; Thames TV (ITV in London on weekdays) mounted the series for 26 episodes worth, with Sir Hugh Greene as a consultant (with some assistance from his brother Graham Greene, who shared his interest in the period).
The American syndie run didn't take hold, and the show vanished after the 26 episodes ran; I didn't hear of Rivals again until it became available on DVD a few years ago (the series occupies a place of honor on my Old DVD Wall).
My Question: which Rivals episode is Channel 3 showing this week?
I would kind of like to take a look at it sometime soon ...

  2. Note of interest: Bel Lange, the host of The Outdoorsman on KOVR 13 was the manager of that station.

  3. I had originally thought Wee Pals on KGO was an incorrect listing of Kid Power, an animated Saturday morning series based on Morrie Turner's "Wee Pals" newspaper comic strip.Turns out, this station produced a live-action program also based on the comic strip that aired concurrently with the cartoon version, and that is what is entered here.

  4. KPIX pre-empted MASH, which would seem unthinkable in later seasons, but the show was just three months old at the time, and not yet a hit. The station was owned by Westinghouse, which always had a 'thing' for owning network affiliates so they could screw around with the schedule. At least this time, it's for longtime Westinghouse star Mike Douglas, with the local news and public affairs stuff airing outside of CBS time.
