What's on TV? Monday, January 12, 1959

Mondays, I've found, are usually the toughest days of the week to get through; to be able to come home from work (or school) and unwind in front of the TV is one of life's simple pleasures. If that's what you're looking for this week, then tonight's your night. Aside from the premiere of The Bell Telephone Hour (which I mentioned on Saturday), there's pleasant music on The Voice of Firestone (unfortunately, on at the same time as Telephone); Tony Bennett guests on The Danny Thomas Show (also on at the same time), and Danny Thomas is in turn a guest on Ernie Ford's show. If you're looking for action and live in the right market, you can watch Highway Patrol, Sheriff of Cochise, San Francisco Beat and Badge 714. You can probably find more of your favorites as you browse these listings, from the Minnesota State Edition.

  1. A belated contribution:

    - Looking through the listings here, I note the presence on ABC's daytime schedule of Music Bingo, which I'm old enough (just) to remember from its original run.
Since guessing song titles was the premise here, a singing host was required, and Music Bingo had one: a handsome young man named Johnny Gilbert.
    Yes - that Johnny Gilbert.
Mr. Gilbert is now 96 years old; he records his Jeopardy announcements from a home studio, for dubbing in post-production - which he has announced that he will continue to do into the immediate future.

    - Also on ABC tonight: Shirley Temple's Storybook, in its second season.
Season One was on NBC, live-on-tape and in Living Color.
Season Two was on ABC, filmed in black-and-white.
I saw this particular episode as a syndicated rerun, many years after this airing.
"Sleeping Beauty" was played by Anne Helm, a long-standing heartthrob of mine.
The Handsome Prince was some beefcake whom I've long since forgotten.
The Evil Fairy was Judith Evelyn, who played hags for years.
The King and Queen were Alexander Scourby and Nancy Marchand, respectively.
But what I noticed in this after-the-fact showing were two rival princes who were trying to get to the Beauty before the HP did.
Thorabore was a loud, blustering bully, with a bushy black beard that was obviously home-grown: Pernell Roberts (pre-Bonanza).
Perriscale the Precious was - well, the name kind of says it all, doesn't it?
It took me a while to recognize the actor: Robert Quarry, a long way from Count Yorga.
I can't find this version on YouTube or on DVD, legal or otherwise; I would like to see it again (mainly for Anne Helm ...).
