We've looked at TV Guides from New York City before, but I don't think we've ever gone this far back in time, and it's a pleasure to look at all the familiar names on local broadcasts: news from Robert Trout and Ron Cochran, sports from Chris Schenkel and Jim McKay, Steve Allen with his local program prior to the start of the national Tonight Show broadcast, Dancetime with Allen Ludden. It's also nice to see DuMont as a living network; this marks the last season in which the network would broadcast seven nights a week, although many of its programs would be cancelled in the spring as the network crumbled. Good thing most of their affiliates have agreements with other networks!

Steve Allen's TONIGHT went national on Sept. 27, 1954, so it was already seen nationwide by this time.
ReplyDeleteBob Crane worked at WICC in Bridgeport early in his career, as I'm sure Jodie Peeler would know as well.
I wonder if the early segment, the one at 11:15, was only local? It has a different description than the 11:30 one.
DeleteDuMont was on it's last leg at this point - and it's interesting to see Ernie Kovacs' show on a 10:30pm - it's been debated if it was ever networked across DuMont or only seen in NYC
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad DuMont wasn't able to hang on, though I'm not sure what would have turned things around for themm. This is one of the rare issues that I've done where they actually have a full-time affiliate.
Delete6:05
ReplyDeleteFeature—Bill Leonard - Leonard: future CBS News president, future stepfather of Chris Wallace (boss to Mike Wallace)
Ooh, good one - I love those links!
DeleteWhat was the reasoning for The Tonight Show not starting until 11.30? In Australia we had our tonight shows usually start at 9.30 or 10.00. Isn't everyone in bed by 11.30 over there??
ReplyDeleteI am, I know that for sure. Prime time here is very strange; in the Eastern and Pacific time zones, it runs from 8:00 - 11:00 p.m.; hence, The Tonight Show would come on after the local news at 11:00. In the Central and Mountain time zones, prime time runs from 7:00 - 10:00 p.m.
DeleteProgramming is broadcast simultaneously in the Eastern and Central time zones (with the exception of live programming), which accounts for the one-hour difference. It's delayed by an hour in the Mountain zone, and Pacific gets it on what amounts to a three-hour delay.
I've long felt, and it's only partly because I've spent most of my life in the Central time zone, that it's the perfect zone. Ten p.m. seems like the proper time to wrap things up for the night!
