What's on TV? Sunday, April 9, 1967

If you want to appreciate how sports has changed over the years, this would be a good example. ABC is in Boston for Game 4 of the Eastern Division finals; in 2019, Game 4 of the Eastern finals was played on May 20. CBS's broadcast of the final round of the Masters ran for 90 minutes and covered the last five holes; in case of a tie, the final holes of an 18-hole playoff would be shown Monday afternoon. Final round coverage in 2019 included 18-hole coverage running five hours, with a sudden-death playoff in case of a tie. Not only that, CBS then shows Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour (brought to you by Geritol) after the Masters. (It probably had more viewers than the golf, too.) But stick around for some great primetime programs: The Wonderful World of Color, The FBI, Bonanza, The Andy Williams Show, What's My Line? They don't make Sundays like that anymore. Enjoy the rest of the listings from the Minnesota State Edition.

    1. And here I thought I'd fixed that, only to find out that it was for a future edition. Thanks!

  2. Mitchell,

One thing that was not mentioned in your TV Guide essay or the listings above is a unique occurrence in the NBA game that was shown today. On this date, the Eastern Conference Finals with the Philadelphia and Boston would have been announced by Chris Schenkel and Jack Twyman. However, they are not there. Both sat out because both were members of AFTRA. AFTRA during this time went on strike. This was the same strike that temporarily made Arnold Zenker a star on the CBS Evening news.

Now, who did ABC get to call the NBA playoff game. They (ABC) went behind the scenes and use a young TV director by the name of Chet Forte for play-by-play, while ABC producer Chuck Howard did color. Now, you may think that Chet may have been inexperienced here. However, Chet actually lettered in basketball for Columbia University (making All American over Wilt Chamberlain in 1957) and was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals. However, Chet failed to make the team, ending his basketball career.

As for the game, which the second half is on YouTube, Boston win 121-117. That would be the Celtics only win, as the 76ers would win the series 4 games to 1, en route to NBA Championship series (not finals until 1986), which they would win 4-2 over the San Francisco Warriors.

As for Chet, he did not sound too bad, but ABC would be glad to have Schenkel back when the AFTRA Strike ended the next day, allowing the Academy Awards to go on unhindered. Chet would famously direct ABC's Monday Night Football telecasts from its inception in 1970 until the mid 1980s. Chet died at age 60 in 1996.

    1. Thanks, Sean! I saw that video a few years ago, but I didn't connect it to this issue until after I'd already published it. I'm glad you mentioned it; it's a fun video, and a fascinating add to the story.
