What's on TV? Thursday, May 22, 1958

I mentioned on Saturday that one of the most notable features in today's programming is the color broadcast of President Eisenhower at the grand opening of the WRC studios, but that's not the only thing worth watching today. "Bomber's Moon," tonight's presentation on Playhouse 90, is a war drama from Rod Serling; and Climax presents a tough story of tensions between farmers and ranchers in Texas (appropriate, since we're looking at the Dallas-Fort Worth edition) starring Lee Marvin, William Shatner, and Harry Townes. There's a fine lineup of variety shows with some swell guest stars. (Andy WIlliams with Pat Boone!) There are even some very good late night movies. (Berlin Correspondent, Mildred Pierce.) All in all, a night worthy of your consideration.

  1. This is about the Saturday entry: I'm putting it here because it's easier this way.

    Anyway ...

I mentioned last time that on Monday, May 19, NBC's Matinee Theatre aired "Nine-Finger Jack", with Eva Gabor and Patrick Macnee: this show running at 2:00 in the afternoon, live and in color.
Yesterday, quite by accident, I happened to discover that the original short story that this episode was based on was written by one of my favorites, Anthony Boucher.
... And furthermore, that I happened to have that story in one of Tony Boucher's short story collections.
Here's the listing, from that week's TV Guide:

... John Smith has made money as a professional lady-killer. He has collected nine insurance policies on as many wives, and is currently working on number 10 - Hester. But Hester proves to be a little more difficult to do away with ...

Today, I pulled out The Compleat Boucher and read "Nine-Finger Jack", as it was published in Esquire in 1951; it's a short-short (only four pages long in the book), but reading it brought up the question as to how this particular plot could be adapted to TV - especially early-afternoon network TV.
(Would the early afternoon timeslot have made this a luncheon Boucher?)
    (Sorry - couldn't resist ...)

The reason I'm bringing it up here:
As you might recall, one of my Care packages to you included Tony Boucher's 1942 novel, Rocket To The Morgue.
I was just wondering if you'd gotten around to reading it yet ... and if so, how you might have enjoyed it.
    Just curious, is all ...

    1. Haven't had a chance yet, but I'm looking at it as I type. I'm so far behind on so many things it isn't funny. But it's next on the list, after the last 20 pages of Mike Hammer's "The Body Lovers."
