It's ironic how things sometimes work. On Saturday, when I was talking about the George Bernard Shaw play on Omnibus, I mentioned "Pygmalion" as one of the many famous plays that Shaw had written—and lo and behold, here it is, on WBKB at 8:00. See it up there? I love it when that kind of thing happens. Otherwise, it's a quiet TV day in Chicagoland (aside from Milton Berle's Texaco Star Theater, which was never quiet), one filled with the anthologies that were so popular in the 1950s. And Frank Reynolds giving the weather—let's just hope they get the forecast right.

Does anyone know if Lee Philip on WBBM was the same woman who eventually married Bill Bell & created THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS with him? I'd be interested to know. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteIt is indeed!
DeleteJust curious about something, maybe you can help me out. :) It seems like a lot of the movies shown on TV back then must have been severely edited for time. Case in point, "Topper Returns" on channel 7 at 7 p.m. and "Stagecoach" on channel 4 at 7 p.m. Was "Stagecoach" the 1939 version? Perhaps the listing says? I would have thought it would be the opposite, with not much in the way of programming, why would they edit the movies?
ReplyDeleteSteve, it is the 1939 version (it doesn't give the year, but it does list the cast). Sometimes movies--even ones like "Stagecoach" that only run about 90 minutes--were shown in two parts to maximize the number of commercials, but that doesn't appear to be the case here. These don't appear to have been network runs, so they would have been limited in time in order to join network programming (at least on CBS). But even though movies were severely edited back in these day, this one does seem extreme. Hard to imagine today, isn't it?
