What's on TV? Thursday, July 14, 1966

Some shows in the lineup today that we don't often get a chance to see, mainly because they weren't on that long. For instance, ABC's The Double Life of Henry Phyfe, starring Red Buttons as a man hired by the government to impersonate a foreign agent, his exact duplicate, who'd been killed. Seventeen episodes. And then there's McKeever and the Colonel, at 6:00 p.m. on KMSP. It's a sitcom from 1963, set at a military academy. Twenty-six episodes. Mickie Finn's was an NBC summer replacement series for Juliet Prowse's cancelled Mona McCluskey; it was a variety show starring Fred Finn and his then-wife Barbara, who went by the name of Mickie Finn, and was based on their San Diego Roaring '20s-style nightclub. Sixteen episodes. So, if you're reading this Minnesota State Edition, you can see that not everything in classic television is classic, at least not in a hall-of-fame sense.

  1. Dan Rowan and Dick Martin would be two years away from hosting Laugh-In on NBC, Brian Keith would be two months away from
starring in Family Affair on CBS and Sheila MacRae would be two months away from becoming a regular on The Jackie Gleason Show on CBS, and Frank Fontaine had left the series by then. Cheryl Jackson

    1. Let's not forget that Joey Bishop, who was the guest host on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson this week, would be nine months away from hosting his own late-night show on ABC, alongside the legendary Regis Philbin. And actually, Dan Rowan and Dick Martin would be a year and-a-half away from hosting Laugh-In (it would premiere January 22, 1968).

  2. Ha. I was 12 years old then, and remember when this new show Mickie Finn's appeared. The title intrigued me, so I tuned in. I really didn't get it; old-timey banjo and piano music centered around this blond woman. I'd probably like it more now. :)

  3. Wilbur, I was the same age as you in July 1966 and thought the same thing about Mickey Finn's! Fortunately, the bar at the college I went to in 1971 had the same name and was more fun...

  4. I wonder how WCCO got a 50-minute version of The Mike Douglas Show? I know it was offered in 60 and 90-minute formats, but 50?
