Network television had, by 1969, converted almost entirely to color. (And if you don't think it's a pain putting the little "C" after all these shows, you've got a nother think coming. Someone at TV Guide must hve felt the same way, because it isn't long after this that they start labeling those few shows that air in black-and-white instead.) You'll notice, though, that there are still a handful of daytime programs, mostly reruns, from the pre-color era. Most educational programming is still in B&W, and so are some local programs. And, of course, so is Stock Market Report on WIBF, where you don't need color to tell you that you're stocks are in the black; the Dow ends the day up 4.70, closing at 825.90. By comparison, this last Friday the market closed at 32,627.97—it's not just TV changing over the years. This week's listings are from Philadelphia.

Were there that many reruns from the 1950's and early 60's to justify three independent TV stations in Philadelphia in 1969??? Imagine the excitement on WIBF watching a stock ticker for 6 hrs a day....
ReplyDeleteNYC also had 3 independent stations in the 60's. WNEW (5), WOR (9) and WPIX (11).
DeleteLA had 4 independent stations on channels 5, 9, 11 & 13. PBS there was on channel 28.
DeleteI remember summer of 1969 very well since it's when we first got a color TV and UHF reception with an outside antenna. We were on the cutting edge! Thank you, dad! I first started watching The Edge of Night at 3:30 on CBS followed by Dark Shadows at 4:00 on ABC. CBS soaps were still mostly broadcast live with organ music, and every now and then you could hear a flub in the theme song.
ReplyDeleteNYC also had 3 independent stations in the 60's. WNEW 5, WOR 9 and WPIX 11
