What's on TV? Tuesday, August 10, 1965

All this week on NBC's You Don't Say!, it's the battle of the doctors, as Dr. Joyce Brothers takes on Dr. Frank Baxter. Who is Dr. Frank Baxter? Well, in 1965 you would have recognized him. According to the always-reliable Wikipedia, "Baxter is best remembered for his appearances from 1956–1962 as 'Dr. Research' in The Bell Laboratory Science Series of television specials. These films became a staple in American classrooms from the 1960s through the 1980s. The Bell series combined scientific footage, live actors and animation to convey scientific concepts and history in a lively, entertaining way; and the bald, bespectacled and affable Baxter served as narrator, lecturer and host. These films made Baxter (who was not a scientist) something of a scientific icon among baby boomers.

"Several of Baxter's science films have been released on DVD. Baxter also appeared (as himself) in a prologue to the 1956 film The Mole People, in which he gave a brief history of theories of life beneath the surface of the earth.

"In 1966, Baxter hosted a popular TV series called The Four Winds to Adventure, featuring filmmakers exploring little-known areas of the world, whether across continents, oceans, or local people and animals in a particular region."

And now you know the rest of the story. Let's go to the Minnesota State Edition.

  1. THE MATCH GAME also had a matchup of similar guest stars: game show hosts Bill Leyden (then of CALL MY BLUFF) and Art James (between SAY WHEN! and FRACTURED PHRASES).

  2. Well, I don't have this issue ... but I do remember this week.
The summer of '65 was right after my freshman year of Oak Lawn Community High School.
Having no outdoor inclinations of any sort, I stayed home and watched daytime game shows.

As noted, this week You Don't Say featured Drs. Joyce Brothers and Frank Baxter, who plainly were having a ball.
Dr. Baxter in particular was in his element, displaying what his colleagues knew was a proclivity for puns and wordplay, which served him well in the playing of the game.
You Don't Say! began with the celebs giving a clue to their own names:
"People put their money in the _____ "
    "Mattress?"
" No - Bank! I'm Dr. Bank Fraxter!"
    Summer Phunne!

    And right after that:
The Match Game (the old, clean version) did Game Show Week, with Bill Leyden and Art James doing panel duty for Gene Rayburn.
Rayburn was a frequent guest on Call My Bluff, where he and Leyden would regularly rag on each other; on one of this week's shows, Rayburn switched places with Art James taking over as host, and Bill and Gene running amok.
The civilian contestants seemed to be having fun with it all ...

    Elsewhere:
Today the bicycle brought to KSTP (ch5) Lloyd Thaxton's dance party, which I must have seen the previous week in Chicago.
This is one I wish I had a copy of - check the guests and you'll know why:
Where else were you going to see the Dave Brubeck Quartet and Peter, Paul, and Mary - performing together?
Between numbers, Lloyd had a nice chat-up with Dave Brubeck and Peter Yarrow, talking up the possibilities of Jazz and Folk (would they call it Fazz - or Jolk?).
Thaxton's regular teen clientele seemed to get a kick out of the performance (demographics didn't exist back then).
I can't find this particular Thaxton show on YouTube; if anyone knows where it can be found, by all means correct me ...

By the bye, in case no one else notices:
Your listing for KMSP (ch9) has a hole in it:
Peyton Place should be at 8:30, and The Fugitive should be at 9:00.
(I'm fairly certain that Walter Brennan didn't do a two-hour Tycoon that night ...)

    1. Thank you, sir--fixed. And educational as always!

  3. Guest Steve Alaino on "Where The Action Is" has a distinct Billboard Singles Chart record. He had more hits on the hot 100 (9) without any of them hitting the top 40.

Thank you so much for this blog/column. It is one of the highlights of my week!

    Steve
