What's on TV? Friday, June 18, 1965

You know that summer is on the way when you see notices for programs like Vacation Playhouse, which will be filling in for Gomer Pyle starting next week. Reruns dominate the rest of the night, except for that special on gambling that I mentioned on Friday. But I think the Minnesota Twins game on WTCN looks very attractive, especially since this is the year the Twins go to the World Series. At least that's what I was probably watching, since this TV Guide is from the Twin Cities.

  2. Actually, this was the next-to-last season of Farmer's Daughter.
The final season - the one in color - started in September.

  3. "Vacation Playhouse" was one of those summer replacement shows that were referred to as "Garbage Can Theatre" by the networks because they consisted of pilots for projected series that didn't get picked up.

There was one notable exception: In the summer of 1960, CBS aired a pilot on one of those "Garbage Can Theatre" shows about a TV comedy writer, with (I believe) Carl Reiner in the title role. Although the networks rejected that pilot, so many viewers wrote in saying they wanted to see more that CBS reconsidered the show and it became a series in the fall of 1961, with a new lead actor. The show that resulted was one of TV's all-time classics---"The Dick VanDyke Show ".
