This happens more often than you'd think: I open the TV Guide and find a listing for something I've just seen. (Considering the number of years I've been at this, I suppose it's a surprise it doesn't happen all the time.) This particular time, it was the thriller Fear No More, on KDAL, with Mala Powers and Jacques Bergerac. I hadn't heard of it before, but it's a pretty good movie, and Bergerac in particular is very good. I'd better look at next week's issue and see what I'll be watching this weekend. Speaking of movies, do you notice how many Westerns they're showing late night? I always thought Friday nights were for cheesy monster movies, and Saturday mornings were for Westerns. Oh well. Enjoy the Friday night listings from the Minnesota State Edition.

“The Desperado”
(1954)
|
How bad was the Smothers Brothers' sitcom? It had wildly popular Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. (a top-ten show its entire run) as a lead-in, and was opposite low-rated Mister Roberts, and The Farmer's Daughter, which was hemorrhaging viewers in its final season, and it STILL couldn't make it. Guess Mom didn't like it best.
ReplyDeleteIf the TV Guide story is accurate, it was Tom and Dick who didn't like The Smothers Brothers Show.
DeleteThey toughed out that first season, with old-style writer/producers who didn't get them; reportedly it was their decision to call it off, and wait for another opportunity (which came sooner than they thought - but that's another story ...).
CBS ultimately made Friday a movie night (the path of least resistance);
for NBC and ABC, Friday was a "bubble night" for the rest of the '60s - and that's another story ...
Smothers Brothers ranked a respectable # 48 for the season, and averaged a 33 share which *usually* would have brought renewal--but that was a huge dropoff as you note from Gomer Pyle, which was TV's # 2 show. At mid-season, Smothers Brothers had a 18.5 rating to Gomer's 27.2, so it was losing one third of Gomer's viewers.
ReplyDeleteOrioles shut out Twins that night, 3-0 behind the pitching of future Jockey model Jim Palmer, while Frank Robinson belted a solo blast for the league-leaders and eventual world champs.
ReplyDelete"Sing Along" was actually reruns of "Sing Along With Mitch" which NBC exhumed as a summer replacement in 1966, some two years after the show had ceased production.
