What's on TV? Friday, August 20, 1965

The first thing we can do is forget all those notices about Gemini mission updates preempting regular programming. The launch won't be until tomorrow, so it's business as usual. And what about that business? True, we've got "original" summer shows like Vacation Playhouse, but remember that people often used the summer rerun season to catch up with programs they missed because they weren't home, or they were watching another of their favorite shows. So if, for example, you were a regular fan of Slattery's People (and I'm sure the producers wished there were more of you), you might take this opportunity to switch over to that Jack Paar repeat, with a delightful lineup including Mary Martin and Nichols and May. That's just the way it was when there weren't such things as DVRs and on-demand programming. Your favorites are from the Minnesota State Edition.

  1. I only just located my Chicago edition (the seventies - my seventies - are catching up with me); your header grab caught my eye.

    Your passing mention of Slattery's People is interesting - and would be of even more interest to Hal Horn;
    This week's rerun is "Bill Bailey, Why Did You Come Home?", with Guest Star Forrest Tucker in the title role.
    Tuck plays a wealthy man who buys a tract home in his old suburb - which he then tears down, and builds in its place a Gothic pile which definitely doesn't match with the other "little boxes" in the neighborhood.
    This was the closest that Slattery came to doing a comedy episode (it did turn kinda serious toward the end), and Tuck ran all the way with it.
    I'm betting that Hal Horn saw this in its first run; I saw tonight's rerun on this night (I was in high school at the time) and I liked it just fine.
    The reason I didn't see the first run was because my dad was a 12 O'Clock High fan.
    As it happens, 12 O'Clock High is running their two-part "POW" episode, which I remember for teaching me how to pronounce Alf Kjellin's name (jell-EEN - and thanks to Quinn Martin for his service in that realm).
    By the way, Jack Paar wouldn't have been a factor in our house - but that's another story ...

    - Meanwhile, Valentine's Day, the very underrated sitcom that's legendary for being the only TV series where Tony Franciosa didn't fight with the producer (the legendary Hal Kanter - but that's anotherstory), is running "A Muffin Is Not A Tart", which is a comic riff on the then-current scandal in Britain involving Christine Keeler and John Profumo (and you have to be at least my age to remember that one).
    Valentine's Day is a show I'd like to see again; as a teenager, I thought it was very funny - Tony Franciosa and Jack Soo made a terrific comedy team.
    Also, a terrific theme tune, and commercial billboards like the following:
    Valentine's Day is brought to you to sell things by ...
    (Different jokes each week, but you get the idea.)

    There was a lot of other stuff that week (which I probably should have written up last week); I may get to that later today.

    1. You know, I'd never thought much one way or another about "Valentine's Day," although I've seen it many times in TV Guide, but after watching "Search," I've had a much greater appreciation for Tony Franciosa, and between that and what you've said, I'd really like to check it out.

      Quick note about the Profumo scandal: I recall a clip from the Huntley-Brinkley Report where Chet Huntley, in giving the story, describes Christine Keeler as a "trollop," which was very interesting--I always thought it suggested Huntley was too dignified to use a more common word on the national news.

  2. Jack Soo later co-starred as Detective Sergeant Nick Yemana in another ABC sitcom, "Barney Miller," alongside Hal Linden. He held that role from 1975 until his death on January 11, 1979.
