What's on TV? Wednesday, December 12, 1962

That CBS Reports special "109 Days to Venus" (not to be confused with the MST3K movie First Spaceship on Venus, which got it all wrong) is about the space probe Mariner II, which was launched in August and is expected to fly by Venus on Friday, 109 days later. In these early years of manned spaceflight, an unmanned probe to Venus would have been almost as exotic. And speaking of exotic, I made a note in the listings that the U.S. Steel Hour episode "Big Day for a Scrambler," starring James Whitmore as an aging professional golfer trying for one last lucky streak, is being done live, which must make it one of the few regular programs still doing so. There's something very distinctive and exciting about live television (I wrote about it here); I wish it was still done today. This week's listings are from the Dallas-Fort Worth edition.

  1. I'm pretty sure that this TV Guide edition was known as the N. Texas Edition, as it included stations from Wichita Falls,TX/Lawton, OK and Sherman, TX, and it included Waco-Temple, TX stations except 1960-68 (when Waco-Temple were listed in the S. Texas Edition). DFW wasn't split out to its own edition until 1972.
I'm surprised that Perry Como's show was in B&W, as the HAZEL color episode aired a year earlier (promoting color tv) had lots of family & neighbors gathering in Hazel's bedroom to watch Perry Como on her new color tv.

    1. I'm not absolutely certain about this ...

I don't think that Castro's Cuba had readily available color television technology in 1962; also, the ability to transmit from such a relatively short distance as Cuba to the USA was beyond even what satellite tech existed back then.
As always, correction welcomed, if needed.

    2. There was a microwave link between Cuba and Key West from the late 1950's, but I don't know if it was still being used in 1962.

Likely, the Perry Como show from Guantanamo Bay was probably taped in advance.

I suspect the equipment used to take that show was taken from Florida.

BTW, the 1962-63 season was the last for Perry doing a weekly show. Beginning in 1963, Perry cut back to.monthly specials in that Wednesday night time slot. The other three weeks of the month were filled by "Suspense Theatre", a filmed anthology series which was produced by Como's production company, Roncom (a contraction of the first and least names of Como's son Ronnie). Kraft Foods sponsored both programs.

Although "Suspense Theatre" was cancelled in 1965, Como continued doing monthly specials for a few more years, then cut back to a couple of shows a year.
