Well, here we are at the big night, the Academy Awards. We're looking again at the Northern California edition, so we're seeing the Oscars in a different light than usual: the start time, for instance, is 7:00 p.m. Pacific, which would be 10:00 p.m. Eastern. That means it's not the last program in prime time, but the first; the Oscars are followed by the shows that the rest of the country normally sees before the awards, and for those stations that do carry Nightlife, they won't be seeing it tonight, even though everything would be done by then. And did you notice how long the timeslot is? Two hours and 30 minutes; more than enough time, in my opinion. One thing I didn't mention on Saturday is that, on a night devoted to celebrating movies, it's appropriate that we have two all-time greats on after the Oscars: All About Eve at 11:45 p.m on KGO, and Double Indemnity at 11:15 p.m. on KXTV. Being able to watch a classic movie after the Academy Awards: now that is something to celebrate.

I think that Wink Martindale, guesting on YOU DON'T SAY! this week, was known as "Win" Martindale while he was hosting WHAT'S THIS SONG? He certainly could've become "Wink" Martindale in the show opening though, at least once. From what I recall, YDS! host Tom Kennedy returned the favor and was a celebrity contestant on WTS? the next week.
ReplyDeleteAccording to TV GUIDE, THE MATCH GAME made its color debut today (if you ignore TVG's likely error in showing its 1962-63 premiere week in color).
ABC probably preempted NIGHTLIFE because the Oscars would run late on the East Coast. At the time (and probably for the most part still now), the East Coast drives much of network programming all over the US.
Fun Fact:
DeleteWinston Conrad Martindale had been known all his life to friends and family as Wink; when he went into radio, that's how he became popular - and attracted NBC's attention.
When he got to New York City, the NBC suits thought that 'Wink' was a silly name for a grown-up game show host, so Winston C. agreed to contract his first name into the more distinguished sounding 'Win'.
Ultimately, Mr. Martindale racked up enough hosting and commercial credits that he was able to reclaim his 'k' - and he's been Wink ever since.
I love happy endings, don't you?
So do I!
DeleteYou're right, Jon, that the issue listed him as "Win." I frequently struggle wondering how familiar readers are with pop culture going back that far (although I know that you and Mike pretty much share my sensibilities). In this case, I was banking that more people would recognize him as "Wink" than "Win," so I made the change, anticipating some might think it was a typo otherwise.
