What's on TV? Wednesday, September 5, 1973

Happy Labor Day to one and all out there. I've always found it interesting that Labor Day is a day that should, one would think, be dedicated to the common laborer, the union member, the guy whose sweat makes our life better. And yet it seems to me that the those who benefit from it most are government and white-collar workers, who get to go shopping and take advantage of all those people who don't get the day off. Oh well; when I was working, I never turned down the chance to have a holiday. At any rate, I considered looking at this issue's Labor Day, what with the Jerry Lewis Telethon and all, but that would have been too easy; it would have wiped out most of a day's programming for two stations. What's the fun in that? So here's our average, ordinary day in TV land, courtesy of the Central California edition. Don't work too hard reading it!

  1. I'm surprised to see Wally Cox listed on HOLLYWOOD SQUARES, as he'd died 7 months earlier. I guess it was a summer rerun.

    1. Otherwise, we've got quite a story here.

    2. That was the case for the syndicated version.

    3. When game shows were doing daily shows for network daytime, and nighttime shows (once a week) for syndication, the syndies were done on a separate schedule, well ahead of the daily slate for the networks.
Hollywood Squares finished its nighttime/syndication slate for '72-'73 well ahead of Wally Cox's death; the reruns aired as scheduled.
Similar problems arose when Bennett Cerf passed on during the syndie run of What's My Line?, as Gil Fates details in his book; and a few years after that, Hollywood Squares got caught out again with the passing of Cliff Arquette.

  2. Dr. Joyce Brothers sandwiched between Tennessee Tuxedo/Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea....Tennessee Tuxedo (again)/Wild Wild West may be the strangest afternoon programming I've ever seen. "Hey kids, watch Tennessee Tuxedo and be sure to keep it on for Dr. Joyce Brothers!"
