There's nothing particularly notable about today's listings other than this: it comes from 70 years ago today. That may not seem like a big deal to those of you who take TV for granted, and perhaps it isn't. But if you're of a certain age, you can remember when TV was a modern marvel, something you didn't take for granted, and when you look at it that way, it is kind of a big deal, or at least something that gives you pause. It will probably not happen in my lifetime, but at some point we'll be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first commercial television broadcast; we won't have a copy of that show, of course, but when TV hits 100, we'll at least be assured that it isn't going away. Today's listings come from Chicagoland.

TV
Amazing how many of these shows fell into the memory hole.
ReplyDeleteIt’s amazing that on CBS from 11:00am-12:30pm you could see 6 different soap operas (Valiant Lady, Love of Life, Search for Tomorrow, The Guiding Light, Portia Faces Life, and The Seeking Heart) and then 2 more from 3-3:30pm with The Brighter Day and The Secret Storm. That’s when they were all 15 minutes each and before the 30 minute soaps began with As the World Turns and The Edge of Night in 1956. Valiant Lady, Portia Faces Life, and The Seekers Heart would be gone to make way for the new ones. NBC had 2 in the morning and 6 in the afternoon. All would be gone within a year or so! ABC had none this early!!
ReplyDeleteThen by the 1970s they were expanding to 60 mins. daily and, in the case of ANOTHER WORLD, 90 mins. for a few years.
