What's on TV? Wednesday, October 19, 1960

One of Dave Garroway's guests on NBC's Today is Louis Untermeyer, poet and critic, a literate and cultured man who was one of the original panelists on What's My Line? back in 1950. (To show you how times have changed, it would never have occurred to me, or probably anyone else, to suggest a poet for my revival of WML.) Unfortunately for him, he also held leftist political beliefs; although there was no tangible evidence that he was a Communist, he was, nonetheless, fired from What's My Line? and blacklisted. I've long since given up trying to sort out right from wrong when it comes to that period of American history, so I just note it for the sake of history. Obviously, by 1960 he was no longer exiled; at this point in time, he may well have been promoting The Britannica Library of Great American Writing, which he had edited; he became the Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress in 1961. He died in 1977. Today's listings come from the North Texas Edition.

  1. Since you mentioned him... IMHO, Gene Rayburn was under-rated as a game show host. He was also a pretty good panelist on To Tell The Truth.

    1. And, as I recall, he appeared a couple of times on the What's My Line? panel near the end of its run. I cannot imagine anyone else handling Match Game the way he did.

  2. You will note that several of the names that are related to news in the Dallas-Ft Worth market listings will be remembered for what they reported 3 years later when John F. Kennedy was killed in Dallas. At KRLD, Channel 4 CBS (Now KDFW) Warren Faulks was the station anchorman and was at the Dallas City Hall that night. On WBAP, Channel 5 NBC (Now KXAS) the affiliate provided a lot of coverage for NBC in color while the network was broadcasting only in black & white. Charles Murphy and Tom Whalen both were on camera for NBC during that terrible weekend. At WFAA, Channel 8 ABC - Dick Wheeler was news anchor in 1960, but by 1963 was on the news staff at KRLD TV and was with News Director Eddie Barker waiting for JFK to arrive at the Trade Mart for the luncheon that never happened. Wes Wise served as sports anchor at Channel 8 but by 1963 was also on the news staff at KRLD Channel 4 and had an encounter with Jack Ruby that weekend. He later served as Dallas mayor.

    1. It's one of the small pleasures I get from looking through a TV Guide, picking out some of the familiar names from that coverage. One of my great experiences was living in Dallas in 2013 during the 50th anniversary coverage, and getting to the Sixth Floor Museum for some of the special events.

    2. I see another name connected with JFK on WFAA-TV at 10 AM. Julie Benell's show was on at noon 3 years later and was the show interrupted by the first news of JFK's shooting.

    3. I always think of that whenever I see her name in one of these issues.
