What's on TV? Friday, September 23, 1966

There's an interesting programming note at the beginning of today's listings.  It notes that NASA was planning to launch Surveyor 2 on September 20, with a planned landing on September 23, for which the networks might provide special coverage.  The Surveyor program was a vital preliminary step in the manned space program, allowing NASA to take photographs of possible landing sites and test out various mechanisms which astronauts would use on the flight.  As it happens, Surveyor 2 crashed prior to landing, so there was no coverage.  I can still recall the magic of the Ranger spacecrafts taking the first pictures of the moon by an American craft.  Hard for people now to believe what a sensation that was.

We're back in Dallas-Fort Worth this week.  Nothing special to note, so we'll get right to the listings.

  1. I suspect it's possible to draw a line from the disappearance of news from most TV and radio stations to the general dumbing down of American culture. Browsing these listings you notice that every few hours, viewers engaged with the world via a quick news update just as radio listeners used to get, even on the big Top 40 stations aimed at younger audiences. It was harder to opt out of at least a modest degree of citizenship. Not like today, when most people can name more Kardashians than they can Supreme Court justices.

  2. As late as September, 1966, Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" still began at 11:15 P.M. Eastern time (10:15 Central).

Many NBC affiliates had by this time extended late-night local newscasts until 11:30 (10:30 Central).

In the fall of 1966, Carson didn't come out to do his monologue until fifteen minutes into the show (when most stations joined the show). The 11:15-11:30 (10:15-10:30 Central) segment was a "pre-show" with Ed McMahon and music from the show's band.

A few months later, these first fifteen minutes were eliminated.

  3. "Showdown" was a unique game show to say the least.

Hosted by Joe Pyne (perhaps radio's first "in-your-face" talkmaster; he also had a local TV show in Los Angeles that went national shortly thereafter), the show had a memorable gimmick: If you gave a wrong answer, you vanished out of sight behind your contestant's podium (I think the contestant had to squat down behind their podium; someone else claimed they sued "breakaway" seats).

By late October, "Showdown" was history, but the show that replaced it on NBC's daytime schedule, "Hollywood Squares", would become one of TV's all-time daytime smash hits.
