What's on TV? Tuesday, December 16, 1958

We're 10 days out from Christmas, and we do have a couple of seasonal shows on tap tonight; Songs of Christmas on KTCA at 6:00 p.m. (I wonder if high school choirs are even allowed to sing sacred carols anymore?), and The Christmas Gift at 9:00 p.m. on WCCO. Never fear, though; there's plenty more to watch. In case you hadn't guessed, we're in Minnesota this week.

I'd never heard of Parole; it's a rather unusual example of a reality series, involving real criminals pleading their cases before real parole boards. I don't think I've ever heard of such a thing on television, and frankly I'm surprised someone hasn't thought of this since. Perhaps they could use some of the convicts arrested in Cops.

I'm not positive, but I believe Sherwood Forest is the alternate title to The Adventures of Robin Hood, starring Richard Greene. Of course, we know that Badge 714 is the syndicated title of Dragnet. Interesting, isn't it, that we get to see both Dragnet and 714 on KSTP tonight? Kind of like getting to see Gunsmoke and Marshal Dillon on Saturday night on WCCO.

Like ParoleConfession was a television series that featured real-life criminals. In this case, it involved advertising executive and Episcopal priest Jack Wyatt interviewing various criminals and then talking to experts in an effort to discover the root causes of crime. To the classic TV historian, its main claim to fame is that when it was cancelled in 1959, it was replaced by Alcoa Presents, also known as One Step Beyond.

I don't know much about the Chicago wrestling program, although this bout could have been telecast on the show at some point in time; it's a woman's match that includes a wrestler with the unlikely name of Yulie Brynner. Yulie Brynner was billed as the "World's Ugliest Woman," which I'm in no position to disagree with. Needless to say, Yulie Brynner is bald.

She was popular in the 1940s and 50s; I wonder what stage her career was at when she appeared on Tonight?

  1. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but these listings are actually for Tuesday, December 16, 1958, not December 15, which was actually a Monday.
