What's on TV? Tuesday, August 22, 1967

There was really only one choice to look at this week; tonight is part one of the two-part Fugitive finale. I mentioned this on Saturday, but it bears repeating: holding back the final episode until the very end of the show's run, after the summer reruns, is brilliant. Yes, I know that it may have been an accident, that once the decision to end the series had been made, there wasn't time to write a final episode before the summer; still, felix culpa, happy fault. It's clearly the highlight of this week, probably one of the greatest highlights of any summer season. Not, however, that there's nothing else to watch—just see for yourself. The listings, as you might have known, are from the Twin Cities.

John Gunther was one of the 20th Century's great sociopolitical historians, a foreign correspondent who wrote a series of "inside" books looking at the political, social, and business climates of each continent. The Lost City, which he discusses on tonight's Book Beat, covers his years in Vienna between the world wars. His most famous work is Death Be Not Proudthe story of his son, Johnny, who died of a brain tumor at the age of 17; it was made into a TV-movie in 1975, with Arthur Hill as Gunther, Jane Alexander as his wife, and Robby Benson as Johnny.

Strange, isn't it, to think of Burgess Meredith guest hosting on Today? Actually, it probably wouldn't be nearly as strange today, considering the show's mostly showbiz anyway.

You know, that lineup on ABC isn't bad; there may well be a few of you out there who have all of the episodes that were shown that night. ABC may have had a reputation for being a third-place network in the ratings, but in retrospect we see there was some real quality. I'll bet people who look at it today imagine the network was much more popular than it actually was at the time.

Ariane Sheppard, one of Virginia Graham's guests at 3:00 p.m., is the second wife of Dr. Sam Sheppard, who'd been acquitted the previous year in the famous retrial for the murder of his first wife. Fun fact: her sister, Magda, is better known as the wife of Joseph Goebbels. Small world, isn't it? TV

  1. More or less in order:

    - Just noticed that tonight's Daktari features a late performance by stage star Rex Ingram, best known as De Lawd in the film of Marc Connelly's Green Pastures (which you couldn't do nowadays, I know, but still …).

    - Semi-related: a couple of channels over, The Girl From UNCLE has "The Danish Blue Affair", one of the three episodes that closed out the directing career of Mitchell Leisen, a legend from the Paramount lot going back to the '30s.
Here, Leisen is directing Dom DeLuise in a typically screwball GFU show about a microdot hidden in a bite of cheese (insert your own joke here).

    - Leading into the Fugitive Semi-final, Peyton Place introduces Dan Duryea as Eddie Jacks, in what proved to be the last major acting appearance of his career.
The story goes that Duryea had just gotten word from his doctors that his cancer had kicked in, making his PP arrival all the more significant.
Dan Duryea stayed for the whole season, getting some of the best notices of his career; he passed on shortly after his final episode was shown.

    1. It's unfortunate about Green Pastures - as I recall, the Hallmark Hall of Fame did that twice, with "Rochester" Anderson and Butterfly McQueen. What cultural history we've lost.

  2. That's so true about ABC. I was thinking about it the other day and came to the conclusion that the thing that helped ABC long term was the thing that kept them in 3rd place short term, their inability to develop variety shows and specials. They just had flop after flop so they kept having to rely on scripted filmed things that held up better in re-runs. More people were watching Flip Wilson, even if nobody ever really wanted to re-watch Flip Wilson.

    1. That's a very good point which I hadn't considered before!

  3. ABC made the same mistakes that NBC would make in their late 70's/early 80's dead period; they overexposed their few hits, with BATMAN and PEYTON PLACE across two and three nights respectively, and they had too quick a hook with shows that might have developed if given enough time.

The Tuesday night lineup was actually a winner for ABC during 1965-66; at least at mid-season, it was the only night of the week ABC was winning, despite CBS having the hits RED SKELTON and PETTICOAT JUNCTION. ABC remarkably didn't have a top 30 show, but every show in the lineup had over a 30 share and ranked between 34th and 46th for the season: COMBAT, McHALE'S NAVY, F TROOP, PEYTON PLACE, and THE FUGITIVE. Consistency counts; both NBC and CBS had duds hurting their overall numbers for the night.

There were also curious decisions with their hit shows: moving BEN CASEY opposite THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES at its peak, for ex

  4. Thanks Mitchell for this great site! I appreciate your insight although I don't always agree with the tenor of your comments, you always make me consider your side.
At 9pm on WCCO is a news "special" called 'The Hippie Temptation". Hosted by Harry Reasoner, it's a hilarious reactionary indictment of the hippie culture. Mostly filmed in San Francisco in the Haight-Ashbury area and Golden Gate Park, it has some wonderful live and interview footage of the Grateful Dead, among other musical and social figures of that time. A great time capsule. It can be viewed on YouTube. It certainly was an easy target for Reasoner and his team!

    1. Daniel, thanks so much for the kind words. I always try (though sometimes fall short) to keep things neutral here, and the times when I do interject my own opinion, I like to think that I'm making clear that it is just that, an opinion, and that people are free to joust with it. I figure we're all here for one reason, TV, and that we should all be able to enjoy it!\

I suspect that Reasoner report is online somewhere, and I've got to check it out sometime!

  5. Wonder who the center square was that day on Squares? I'll say Morey Amsterdam for the win. Kathryn Hays, who was also on Squares that day is best known for playing Kim Hughes/Dixon/Stewart/Andropolus on As The World Turns and also played the mute "Empath" on a season 3 Star Trek episode.

    1. In '67, Kathryn Hays was best-known for being the real-life wife of Glenn Ford - who (if memory serves) would have been in the next square over this week (the way Hollywood Squares customarily seated spouses who happened to be booked the same week).
