What's on TV? Monday, October 3, 1966

This week's listings come from the Minnesota State Edition, but for the sake of brevity—both in the space and in the effort—we're concentrating on the Twin Cities, Duluth, and a couple of outlying areas. Some interesting things of note, although I'm sure this will drive Mike Doran crazy: WTCN showing Fellini's , an interesting choice for a local movie package; a rare sighting of The Tammy Grimes Show on KCMT (only four episodes were aired); a slightly less-rare sighting of The Jean Arthur Show on CBS (cancelled after twelve episodes); and one of our eternal questions: why is KSTP's M Squad, starring Lee Marvin as a tough cop, classified as "Police" while Felony Squad, starring Howard Duff, Dennis Cole and Ben Alexander as a trio of tough cops, is called "Drama"? As with the number of licks needed to reach the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Roll Pop, the world may never know.

  1. You Ask … I Answer:

    - Tammy Grimes on Monday:
Here's our old friend, the delayed broadcast (DB).
Noting that KCMT is a dual affiliate, mainly NBC.
ABC being (very) secondary, whichever of their shows got on would be on a catch-as-catch-can basis.
My references indicate that this would most likely the Grimes show from the previous Thursday, which turned out to be the final ABC airing.
Because DB deals were made long before the season began, KCMT was simply playing out the string; the following week, they'd have something else in the slot - either Dating Game (the network replacement) or something else in the station inventory (either a different ABC or NBC half-hour, or something syndie).

    - Jean Arthur's show had only began a few weeks before; the cancellation decision wouldn't have come about for at least another month (it was, as they say, A Different Time).
Parenthetically, there were stories that Miss Arthur, who had been basically retired from active performing for over a decade, had some trouble adjusting to a weekly-TV filming schedule; I can't confirm, but she wouldn't have been the first (or the last, comes to that).

    - My (admittedly imperfect) recollections are that TV Guide had ceased using Police as a designation a few years before this (reasons unknown); they began using Crime Drama a little later.
As to why M Squad still had the Police tag: they simply pulled out an old type slug and used that.
Occam's Razor, folks: sometimes the simplest explanation …

    Happy Birthday to me
    Happy Birthday to me
    Only one more year left
    'Til I turn seven-ty …

( … Not looking forward to it, much …)

  2. One reason Tammy Grimes' show lasted just four weeks was it's timeslot competition: The long-running sitcom "My Three Sons" on CBS, and a highly-touted new space adventure series on NBC, "Star Trek".

With two popular shows as competition, no wonder Ms. Grimes' show was gone by early October.

  3. Interesting that KCMT chose to run The Tammy Grimes Show at 5. That must have been the last episode as the entire run of the show was four episodes. Not the best lead in for Huntley-Brinkley.

  4. Peter, Paul, and Mary coupled with Casey Stengel may well be the strangest guest star coupling ever on a variety show.

  5. It's also interesting to note that KCMT has the Beatles cartoon show on the same night as the Monkees
