What's on TV? Wednesday, September 16, 1964

This week marks the beginning of ABC's new season; NBC and CBS will follow next week. Tonight sees the debut of Shindig and Mickey, as well as the return of The Patty Duke Show and Burke's Law. ABC Scope, which is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. is preempted in the Twin Cities; KMSP was always on the lookout for a low-rated series they could bump in favor of movies or syndicated series, and Scope usually winds up being shown on Sundays. KMSP. NBC doesn't have anything new, but you'll notice they might have something even better: a full schedule of color. That means a lot back then, especially when nobody can match it. Of course, they only have two shows—the 90-minute Virginian and the two-hour Wednesday Night at the Movies, but who's counting? We're coming to you this week from the Twin Cities.

That version of 1984 that KSTP is showing at 12:15 a.m. is a British one, but with American actor Edmond O'Brien as protagonist Winston Smith. It also stars Michael Redgrave, Jan Sterling, and Donald Pleasence. It's considered by some to be the best depiction of Orwell's bleak universe.

Time approximate.

We talked about the Canadian Football on Saturday, but the Vikings-Colts broadcast at 6:30 p.m. is actually a half-hour of edited highlights from Sunday's game. Because of the home blackout rules, shows like this were very popular in the '60s and '70s. They might even have a guest, a player or coach who could explain the significance of the highlights we saw. Of course, I prefer to see it as simply a warmup for the Esks-Argos battle. TV

  1. Incredible (?) Coincidence Dept.:
    - I wonder if anybody in Minn-StP who stayed up late to watch "1984" on ch5 happened to get up the next morning to see Jan Sterling (the femme lead) as guest panelist on ch9's The Price Is Right?
Is this what they call these days a 'disconnect'?
