What's on TV: Thursday, November 22, 1973

I know Thanksgiving isn't until next week, but Turkey Day 1973 fell on the earliest date possible, and you didn't really think that I'd pass up a chance to look at the day's listings, did you? I love Thanksgiving; it marks the start of the holiday season, and compared to Christmas, it's much less stressful and more low-key. (A pity some people have to ruin it by opening the stores instead of waiting until Friday, isn't it?) And then, of course, the smells: turkey, pumpkin pie, apple cinnamon. Ah, it's going to be hard to wait until next Thursday.

One non-related item to draw your attention to: Bob Cromie's guest on Book Beat (WDSE, 10:30 p.m.) is none other that Rex Stout, creator of two of my favorite detectives: the corpulent detective Nero Wolfe, and his assistant Archie Goodwin.

The listings come to you from the Minnesota State Edition.

  1. I see that ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS was the same special that NBC originally aired in 1966. Mitchell mentioned this special on Saturday, but it didn't click for me until I read about it in the listings here. I don't remember seeing this back then, as I was probably having Thanksgiving dinner w/ my family at my grandparents' house at the time. I found this special at a home video store sometime in the 1990s and rented it. I eventually bought it off EBay and/or Amazon in both VHS & DVD formats and still have both today. It was a fun look at a classic w/ lots of celebrities of the time. The 1985 all-star miniseries had a more frightening Jabberwock (possibly early CGI) than the 1966 special, which had Jack Palance prancing around in a lizard suit. The biggest deterrent of the 1966 special was an annoying laugh/applause track. The special was fun for the most part, bringing together personalities as diverse as Agnes Moorehead, Ricardo Montalban, and Jimmy Durante in 1 place, and the Smothers Brothers, as Tweedledee & Tweedledum, had a nice featured song, "The Backwards Alphabet". This is a type of special unfortunately rarely found on tv now.

  2. I had to look up "Godspell Goes to Plimoth Plantation." IMDB says, The Boston cast of Godspell performs songs from the show at Plimoth Plantation as historian Henry Steele Commager narrates the story of Thanksgiving."

So exactly what it says, then.

  3. Wow! I'd love to see that 'Mike Douglas Show'! Yoko Ono and the Plastic Ono Band? Wouldn't John have been there, too? And then to top it all off, they have Spanky McFarland and Darla Hood!
