What's on TV? Thursday, March 7, 1974

What to look for this week? Notice the celebrities on the game and variety shows, a who's-who of names from the early '70s. Some are bigger stars than others, but all of them are at least known for being known. One of the reasons I chose today is because of some series that we don't talk about much here; ABC's Chopper One and Firehouse, for instance. And movies; a lot of movies running on local stations. Have any favorites there? The listings are from the New Jersey-Pennsylvania issue; as is my want, I've ignored New Jersey altogether (nothing personal!) but added New York City.

  1. RE: WTAF schedule: I had no idea the 1966 Lone Ranger animated series from Format Films/Halas & Batchelor ever aired in syndication (We're six years from Filmation's version). Its one of the most obscure Saturday morning cartoons of the mid/late Sixties.

  2. In the absence of the actual issue:

    - An Unanswered Question:
What exactly is Marriage Times Four, which CBS is running in place of its Thursday Night Movie?
I'm making the semi-educated guess that this is four unsold comedy pilots that CBS is amortizing, just after the February sweeps.
Seems to me that it'd be interesting to know what these unsells were …
    … or maybe that's just me …

    - " … some series we don't talk about much here …"
You're not talking about them at all here.
Just saying that Chopper One and Firehouse are there isn't really talking about them.
What they were doing, what the stories were about, how they tried to get attention in the then-contentious three-network race - that might have been interesting …
    ... but maybe that's me, too …

    - Due Diligence Time:
A source check shows that tonight's Chopper One is titled "The Copperhead".
It's about a veteran police sergeant suspected of selling confiscated guns under the table.
This role is apparently played by the veteran Edward Binns, remembered around these parts as Brenner from Back In The Day …
… Sounds interesting, you must admit …

    - The encore of Pueblo, which was a two-and-a-half-hour program in its first run, is apparently cut by half an hour this time around.
    Unless …
    … unless ABC is either (a) pre-empting Firehouse at 8:30;
or (b) delaying the local news and Dick Cavett for a half-hour, to 11:30 and midnight (EST), respectively.
    Anybody remember back that far?

    - As it stands, Pueblo is pre-empting Kung Fu and Streets Of San Francisco, which are two of ABC's better-faring shows of that season.

-Meanwhile, one network over, NBC's Ironside has a pursuit episode which is the wrap-up for their current season.
Next week, Ironside is showing a backdoor pilot for Dr. Domingo, in which Desi Arnaz Sr. is a Cuban émigré physician who also serves as a small-town medical examiner (pretty good show; I've got the DVD).
And the week after that, Ironside has another backdoor pilot, Amy Prentiss, wherein Jessica Walter takes over as Chief of Detectives in the SFPD (that one made the Mystery Movie rotation for a bit).
'Twas the season (see Marriage Times Four above)…

  3. I Love to See the TV Schedule for March 16, 1974.

  4. Nighttime Hollywood Squares was on WNBC and WNEW simultaneously?

  5. Surprising to see the guide organized by station instead of show-time as late as 1974.

  6. Have Marriage Times 4 on cassette tape. CBS Thurday Night Movies (not usual version)
, Pilots. Might have Paul Sand in Friends & Lovers. Preview used the same music you hear for Sunday Night Comedies promos
    in the early 1980s.

  7. Typo, I'm sure. Mission Impossible was an hour-long show.
