What's on TV: Monday, August 10, 1953

Here we are again in Chicagoland, with the added bonus of listings for WTMJ in Milwaukee. I often comment that this is your chance to find your favorites from a particular day, but today is thoroughly ordinary, with a handful of programs that you're so used to seeing in the public domain that it's a surprise to find them in first-run appearances. Captain Video, for instance, still going on DuMont since 1949. or Abbott & Costello, in first-run syndication on WBKB. You'll also see some names that seem out of place, such as Ogden Nash; best known for his witty poems, but there he is on CBS as a panelist on Masquerade Party, hosted by newsman Douglas Edwards. And the guest host for Garry Moore is Meredith Willson, composer of The Music Man, who did quite a bit of TV. And Bud Collyer hosts game shows on two different networks in back-to-back timeslots—how unusual is that?

  1. Looks like Channel 7 had the Hal Roach feature package

  2. Hal Roach Jr. was regearing his studios for full-time TV production.
To raise ready cash, Hal Jr. made his entire film library available to TV distributors at bargain rates; these companies in their turn edited the living daylights out of the properties.
The ABC owned-and-operated stations (WBKB-Channel 7 was the Chicago outlet) were among the first buyers, hence the omnipresence of Roach product throughout the schedule.
Remember a few weeks back when Mitchell wrote up that streamliner with Hitler, Mussolini, and "Sukiyaki"?
Part of the same deal, as was just about everything Hal Roach Sr. made for theaters since sound came in - and even before (some silent comedies were included in the various packages).
And it all worked - Hal Roach Jr. had a considerable as a producer of early syndie TV: Racket Squad, My Little Margie, The Stu Erwin Show, Screen Directors Playhouse, Topper - many, many others in those days.
All of a piece; one supported the other.

  3. Channel 7 kept "Ulmer Turner" busy throughout the day with newscasts starting at 10:55 AM and the last one at 11:00 PM!

    1. For the record:

Ulmer Turner was the man's name.

To be exact, Ulmer Ferdinand Turner; he first appeared on WBKB in Chicago in 1940, when it was still an experimental station on Channel 4 in Chicago.

Turner stayed with WBKB through its commercial licensing in the late '40s,
its initial affiliation with CBS, and transferring with the call letters to ABC and Channel 7 after the merger with Paramount theaters in '53.

While at WBKB, Ulmer Turner also did booth announcing (and the occasional commercial; everybody doubled and tripled up back then).

It was when Turner retired to Florida at the turn of the '60s that Channel 7 began expanding their news operation, starting with getting Alex Dreier to jump from Channel 5 - but that's another story ...
