What's on TV? Friday, July 10, 1964

Xhat a great night of television Friday was back in the early 1960s. CBS alone has Route 66, The Twilight Zone, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. NBC has Bob Hope Presents the Chrysler Theater, which usually had a top-flight cast, and The Jack Paar Program. ABC has Burke's Law, and sports fans would have fun with the Friday night fights. For me, that would have been must-see TV, even if you have to switch between channels. I suppose that makes me old, but you know what? I am old. And if you're a classic TV fan and you can't find anything to watch tonight, I can't help you. By the way, tonight's listings are from Minneapolis-St. Paul.

  1. Seeing as how you once again didn't tell us about the episodes themselves, I propose to fill the gap yet again.
Being July, these are almost all reruns; also, I'm not doing all of them, just the notable (to me) ones:

    CBS (Channel 2 in Chicago):
7:30 pm: Route 66 (not returning in the fall) is showing a two-year-old episode with George Maharis and guest star Joanna Moore, with a typical Stirling Silliphant title: "There I Am - There I Always Am".
I need to see this show, if only to learn the significance of that title ...
8:30: Twilight Zone (also circling the drain) has "Uncle Simon", with Sir Cedric Hardwicke and Constance Ford trading acid-etched dialogue that's scarier than the SF plot elements here.
9:00: The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (moving to NBC come fall) has "How To Get Rid Of Your Wife", with Bob Newhart in a very early actingrole on TV; he devises the title plot for use on his tall harpy wife (Jane Withers), and amusement ensues.

    NBC (Channel 5):
7:30: Bob Hope Presents "The Square Peg" a screwball comedy in which efficiency expert Bob Cummings is hired by a gangster to streamline his "organization". (One of the writers here is Arthur Marx - son of Groucho.)
8:30: That Was The Week That Was is not a rerun tonight - in fact, it's the season finale (they didn't use that term back then, but you know what I mean.)
The listing mentions that TW3 is moving to Tuesday night in the fall, although it discreetly avoids Jack Paar's role in that move.
Also, we take note that contrary to the listing, Elliot Reid and Burr Tillstrom won't return in the fall - but that's another story ...

ABC (channel 7): Burke's Law has "Who Killed Eleanor Davis?".
    Guest Stars (in alphabetical order):
    Nick Adams
    Jane Darwell
    Edward Everett Horton
    Elsa Lanchester
    Terry Moore
    Debra Paget

    WGN-TV (Channel 9):
6:30: The Ray Rayner Theatre shows "General Spanky", a Civil War adventure with the Little Rascals attempting to act seriously (sort of).
8:00: One Step Beyond has one of their tales where some goofballs on a nature hike come across Something They Shouldn't ...
8:30: Surfside 6 has a mob guy called Joe Vodka (Bruce Gordon) calling vengeance on a con man who took his son Joe-Too - except Joe-Too doesn't want to do that ...
9:30: On The Law And Mr. Jones, James Whitmore handles a case for his father.
Dad is played by Broadway star Russ Brown, who was the manager in the original Damn Yankees on stage (he led the ballplayers in "You Gotta Have HEART!").

The DVR was 45 years off, but I could have used one that night ...

  2. In the 70s, CBS alternated each weekday between Sunrise Semester (Mon., Wed., Fri.) and Summer Semester (Tue., Thur., Sat.), the latter for the summer months.

  3. What? No repeat of "The Farmer's Daughter." It aired on ABC on Fridays at 9:30 pm.

    1. FYI:
In November of '63, ABC moved Farmer's Daughter to Wednesday night at 8:30, switching its time slot with The Price Is Right; this held until season's end.

  4. Strange that CBS re-ran "Pete and Gladys" in the mornings. It wasn't an especially high-rated show in its prime time run and with only about 60 episodes, the entire series would be repeated every 13 weeks give or take. I never thought it was a bad show, just an unremarkable show.
