What's on TV? Friday, April 17, 1964

On Saturday I mentioned that the New York Mets game on WHCT marked the opening of Shea Stadium, but there's another baseball game that's a sign of the times: WHDH's coverage of the Boston Red Sox home opener against the Chicago White Sox, which serves as a benefit for the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library Fund that's to be built at Harvard University. It occurred to me that this might have been a special game, an exhibition, but no, it was a regular season game. If you'd suggested such a thing could be possible on Opening Day 1963, you would have been laughed out of town. Enjoy the listings from the Western New England edition.

  1. Did not know that they had pay tv that far back. How did that even work?

    1. It was scrambled over the air and you needed some kind of decoder bix.

I also think you were charged by the show.

WHCT ran pay TV as an experiment authorized by the FCC.

WHCT was also under the same ownership as WOR New York, hence, the Mets. I would think that when the Mets played a night game, WHCT would carry it unscrambled instead of the usual pay-TV fare.

Around 1968, the pay-TV experiment ended and WHCT tried to become a full-fledged independent station with plenty of syndicated shows as well as, in all probability, sports from WOR (Mets baseball, New York Rangers hockey, and New York Knicks basketball)

  2. Program I'd most like to see this week: TEF's talk show with guest Charles Schulz. His famous Time magazine cover that got the ball rolling on A Charlie Brown Christmas is almost exactly a year away.

    1. As it happens, I saw that Tennessee Ernie Ford Show with Charles Schulz when it first aired.
This was TEF's weekday daytime show on ABC, produced at the network's owned-and-operated station in San Francisco, KGO-TV.
Ernie Ford had a ranch just outside SF, which was one reason he agreed to do a morning show after years of prime time success; it was a very informal show, just sitting around talking and joking, with Jim Lange (who was very big in Bay Area radio at the time) as his sidekick (I had occasion to mention it in a comment here a few years back).
Charles Schulz also lived in the Bay Area; he'd known Ernie Ford since he'd licensed the Peanuts characters to do commercials for Ford Motors (this was when he met animator Bill Melendez, who went on to make the specials, but that's another story).
Schulz didn't do many TV appearances, but he made an exception for Ernie Ford, who was a social friend; he was a shy man, so his appearance here wasn't very colorful - and since he only had about ten minutes out of a half-hour show ... well, there you are ...
OK, not much of a story, but I did see the show, So There Too.

  3. WTEV was licensed to New Bedford, Massachusetts (in the Providence TV market), not Northfield.

During their analog days, their signal didn't reach too far to the north (because there was a Channel 6 in Portland, Maine), but reached out well to the west, with good reception in much of Eastern Connecticut.

In fact, Channel 6 was a "drop in" to allow all three networks to have primary affiliates on the VHF dial in the Providence area.
