What's on TV? Sunday, April 27, 1980

Over the years, we've lived in both the Eastern and Central time zones. (The Central is, in my opinion, the most natural, but I'll make an exception now that we're living in God's country.) Although we've never lived in the Pacific time zone, I've visited there before, most recently a couple of years ago, and I will never get used to the idea of sporting event starting at 10:00 in the morning. You'll notice that there's a doubleheader NBA playoff game on CBS today, but it's all over by 3:00 p.m.—what are you supposed to do the rest of the day? Well, this is your chance to find out. Our stations come from the Bay Area.

  1. Under channel 9 KQED at 6:00 p.m., it should read "Julia Child" instead of "KXTV (Sacramento) News Special".

  2. "Julia Child and More Company" to be exact.

  3. This was during the era when CBS would carry NBA playoff games during the week at 11:30 P.M. Eastern and Pacific, even the finals.

It's my understanding that usually, but not always, CBS carried games from.the West Coast in that late slot, but CBS affiliated stations (even in the Pacific time zone) saw games in late night, meaning many West Coast stations would carry West Coast playoff games on a three hour delay at 11:30 P.M. PDT.

The exceptions were the home markets of participating teams.

As an example, if the Los Angeles Lakers faced the Golden State Warriors in a midweek playoff game, CBS stations in the Eastern and Central time zones, along with the CBS stations in Los Angeles and San Francisco would see the game live at 11:30 Eastern/10:30 Central and 8:30 local in Los Angeles and San Francisco. CBS stations in the Mountain time zone got the game in a one-hour delay at 10:30 MDT, while the West Coast, outside of Los Angeles and San Francisco, got the game in a three hour delay at 11:30 PDT.

The worst such case was the 1981 finals between Boston and Houston. The first two games in Boston began at 7:30 P.M. EDT, but only the CBS affiliates in Boston and Houston got the game live. In the rest of the Eastern and Central time zones, the game was on a four hour delay at 11:30 EDT/10:30 CDT; A five hour delay in the Mountain time zone (10:30 MDT), and an unbelievable seven hour delay on the West Coast (11:30 PDT)!
