What's on TV? Wednesday, April 17, 1963

Xt isn't often that you see a CBS affiliate with more color programming than an NBC one in the early 1960s, but that's the case this week with WHDH. The station appears to have made a major commitment to color with its local programs, with the result that it winds up looking like an NBC station! (And that doesn't include carrying The Tonight Show in place of NBC's own affiliate, WBZ). In fact, the history of WHDH (and its successor, WCVB) is a very colorful one, as you can see from the always-reliable Wikipedia. We're with the Eastern New England edition.

  1. ABC's late-news anchorman was Murphy Martin, a booming-voiced gentleman from Dallas, Texas, where he'd been the top local anchorman at WFAA-TV for years.
ABC was looking to beef up its national news profile; Elmer Lower was poaching names from the other networks, but was also keeping his eye on the local stations for anybody who looked and sounded impressive.
Murphy Martin was leading the pack in Dallas on an ABC station (unusual in those days), and so got a nod to come to New York; a few years later, he returned to Dallas, where he became a local news legend - and ultimately a well-loved media figure in the Metroplex for his lifetime.

    Murphy Brown? Freudian slip, maybe?

  2. Steve Alamio, who was a guest on "American Bandstand" that day, would two years later go to work for Dick Clark as a regular on "Where The Action Is", a five days week rock music show featuring performers lip-syncing their current hits in on-location, usually outdoor, settings mostly (but not always) in the Los Angeles area.

  3. Steve Allen's syndicated "comeback" talk/variety show was produced and distributed by WBZ parent Group W/Westinghouse.

While Westinghouse wanted the show to air in late night (which is where the five Group W stations ran it), it's my understanding that only about a dozen stations (including the Westinghouse ones) ran it in late night, with most stations running the show doing so in late afternoon.

Supposedly, a high-school student in Indianapolis rushed home from school and rushed through his homework to see the show in the late afternoon timeslot it reportedly was seen in that city.

    The student's name: David Letterman.
