What's on TV? Tuesday, May 18, 1965

One of the things I most enjoy about looking at New York TV Guides is the big-name network talent that appears on local news broadcasts. Since all the networks have their home bases in NYC, it's not at all uncommon to see, as we do here, Frank McGee, Jim Hartz, Robert MacNeil, and Gabe Pressman on WNBC, Robert Trout on WCBS, or Bill Beutel on WABC. Likewise, in other issues we've seen Bill Ryan on the local news, and in Chicago, Floyd Kalber. Wouldn't that caliber of anchor be cool to see again today? Might even make me start watching the local news again.

  1. Was CAR 54 on WNBC-TV at 8 PM? That show was off NBC by then, and MR. NOVAK, which started at 7:30 PM, was an hour-long program.

  2. This was a month before Robert Trout stepped down as anchor of WCBS-TV 6:30 newscast and Jim Jensen - then anchoring at 11 P.M. - added the earlier newscast to his duties; this, as control of Channel 2's news department transferred from CBS News to the station itself.

At WOR-TV, John Wingate (a longtime WOR Radio stalwart) was news anchor, and Walter Kiernan (a veteran) handled commentary; the newscasts - and all locally produced shows (such as "Joe Franklin's Memory Lane") - were only color in the off-baseball seasons because the bulky RCA TK-41C's they used back then were used for Mets' games and then shuttled back to the studio to keep them warm (that is, whatever the tubes inside the cameras didn't) between October and April. (WOR didn't go full color with both locally-produced shows and Mets games simultaneously until 1967 when new General Electric PE-250 cameras arrived.)

"Van Sickle" at 6:30 anchoring "Local News" on WABC-TV sounds like Jim Van Sickle, who was a part of the initial crop of newscasters for WNBC-TV's two-hour "NewsCenter4" which launched on April 29, 1974. Speaking of WNBC, this was eight days after Channel 4's newscast was expanded from 30 minutes to an hour, leaving "Movie 4's" start time to be shifted from 5 P.M. to 4:30 P.M. - in essence, "Movie 4" was the first 4:30 movie in town among the network O&O's (WCBS-TV's "The Early Show" would follow on Jan. 3, 1966; and WABC, of course, first parked into that slot on Jan. 8, 1968, but "The 4:30 Movie" title wouldn't take hold until about late January 1969). Robert MacNeil had replaced Bill Ryan alongside Gabe Pressman at the anchor desk; this change, plus the time slot change, led to what had been "The Pressman-Ryan Report" becoming "Sixth Hour News."

Also, at WNDT, notice the last program on the list: News by Robert Potts. He would later join WCBS-TV - and also wound up at WNBC at the time "NewsCenter4" was launched.
