What's on TV? Monday, June 20, 1955

There's a note at the beginning of each day's listing in the Mid-States edition: "For Daylight Savings Time Areas Programs Are Seen One Hour Later." Longtime readers will remember past TV Guide discussions of Daylight Savings, and that it has a torturous history of being applied in a haphazard way, even within neighboring cities in the same state. It helps to explain, though, why some of your favorite programs might be airing at 6:00 p.m.—your town isn't observing Daylight Savings! It doesn't, however, explain why ABC's 6:30 p.m. program is called "Concert." It's actually Voice of Firestone, and TV Guide doesn't seem to shy from mentioning programs with their sponsor in the title. Perhaps Firestone just didn't pay for sponsorship in the issue.

  1. "Voice Of Firestone" had an interesting history on TV.

One of the most popular music programs of radio's "Golden Age", dominating listening on Monday nights from 8:30-9 P.M. Eastern time, "Firestone" was far less popular on TV.

A major reason might have been that from most accounts, the radio version was very entertaining but the TV version was very dull.

Another reason was that from the time "Firestone" came to TV, it was simulcast live on both TV and radio.

NBC ran the show on radio starting in 1928, adding a TV simulcast in January of 1949. But by 1954, ratings for the TV version had dropped so much that the network supposedly had trouble selling commercial spots on programs that followed. So NBC dropped the TV version in June of 1954.

So both the TV and radio versions moved to ABC, still simulcast on both. The radio version ended in 1956; the TV version was cancelled in 1959 after Firestone refused to have the show moved to a less desirable timeslot.

In 1962, ABC took "Firestone" back, this time at 10-10:30 P.M. ET on Sundays. ABC got Firestone to go along by telling the tire company that the show would follow a weekly movie series that had some major films, the idea being that the huge audience for the movies would stick around for "Firestone" and finally making the show a hit on TV.

Didn't happen. Those who watched the ABC movie in the 1962-63 season, if they were still going to watch TV at 10 on Sunday nights, were likely to switch from ABC to CBS for "Candid Camera" and "What's My Line?".

"Voice Of Firestone" left the air for good in June of 1963; the revival lasted a single season.
