What's on TV? Tuesday, April 30, 1974

I don't know much about the Burt Bacharach special airing on WCCO at 8:30 p.m., but it has all the earmarks of being a non-network (i.e., syndicated) special: the lack of any ad, not being labeled as a special, and its very presence on WCCO, which was known for pre-empting network shows in favor of programming like this. In fact, a little interweb research tells us that it's Another Evening with Burt Bacharach, first shown in 1970 as an episode of The Kraft Music Hall, and originally made for British TV. The NBC special Love from A to Z, with Liza Minnelli and Charles Aznavour, on opposite Burt, is very much new, however, and as you can see, it's very good.

  1. Mitchell, the Burt Bacharach Special and the show "One Man's China" were shows that WCCO used to preempt CBS's offering on April 30, 1974. CBS aired Game 2 of the NBA Championship Series (since 1986 known as The NBA Finals) between the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks. The Bucks would win in overtime 105-96.

Two things that stand out in this listings. First, the fact that many locals stations preempted championship games of the NBA during the 1970s, show how little TV had regarded basketball at that time. Secondly, the fact that the playoffs ended in early May, now given the NBA/ABA merger and expansion of both teams and the playoffs, the NBA season does not end until mid-June at the earliest. Odd that I am posting this 50 years to the day.

    1. The idea of WCCO preempting the Celtics-Bucks game is outrageous. I wonder if WTCN might have shown it in the Twin Cities? Oddly enough, I was living in the World's Worst Town at the time, and while I've picked on that place a lot over the years, we were able to pick up one of the KELO-land stations from South Dakota, and they did carry the game. I guess there had to be something good about living there!

  2. With regards to "Bewitched" (5:00 PM on Ch. 11), that was the day Agnes Moorehead (Endora) died.
