What's on TV? Tuesday, October 16, 1962

Something in this week's listings that I've never seen before - a double-check mark (√√) next to shows that TV Guide says are "Of unusual interest."  Something else I've never seen - the letters "N-T" stamped on the front cover of my issue, which we'll come to find stands for "North Texas".  It's not something that was added after the fact by a collector; it appears to be original to the issue.  Anyone else ever seen anything like that?

Right away we come to the show that's "Of unusual interest" - an episode of The Dick Powell Show featuring a guest-starring role from Peter Falk, who won an Emmy for his performance in this anthology series last season. He plays a prison doctor looking for volunteers to help him conduct medical experiments on a new hepatitis serum - and Powell plays the cynical inmate who offers to help him out.

As often as I do these TV Guides, I don't think I ever get used to seeing Cronkite's news in a 15-minute time-block.  I don't know why; perhaps it's because he's so closely identified with the half-hour newscast that he would pioneer the next year. I don't have the same feeling about Huntley and Brinkley, although I do wonder how they were able to get everything in with only 15 minutes.  As far as ABC, with no offense intended to Ron Cochran, the less said, the better.

An interesting lineup for the early Merv Griffin Show, isn't it?  Now if that were only Johnny Cash instead of Johnny Nash, we'd really have something.  And the series Empire that you see at 6:30pm? One of the stars is Ryan O'Neal, in his pre-Peyton Place days.

Who Do You Trust?, the 3:30pm game show, is of course the program that used to be hosted by Johnny Carson, which kept him from taking over The Tonight Show until his contract with ABC expired.  That happened just fifteen days ago, on October 1, when Carson helmed Tonight for the first time.

I've mentioned before that KTVT was the independent station in Dallas for many years before becoming the CBS affiliate.  As I recall, during the JFK assassination, KTVT's mobile unit was used by WBAP, the NBC affiliate, to aid in their coverage, in return for the NBC feed being made available to KTVT.

That rerun of Have Gun - Will Travel replaces Chet Huntley Reporting, which I'm guessing probably wasn't a big ratings winner; even back then, news shows and documentaries weren't.  The fact that it's replaced by a Western shouldn't surprise me, since we're in Texas.

When the early fathers of television discussed "educational TV," I suspect this kind of programming was what they had in mind, along with the occasional cultural program and local feature. Certainly not episodes of Downton AbbeyTV

Yes, this was a common practice put in place by the printer to distinguish the myriad editions published at their press. The printer in Texas produced at least eight editions during the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

Printing companies producing one edition did not add the lettering at their location.
