What's on TV? Sunday, October 18, 1964

As you can perhaps tell, there's an election coming up in a couple of weeks, so regular programs are subject to preemption at a moment's notice. Kind of like a civil defense emergency, I suppose. You might also notice that there's no football on WCCO, Channel 4, even though as a CBS affiliate the usually carry NFL games. We've discussed the reason in the past; the NFL's old blackout rule prohibited any game from being shown if the market's home team was playing at home. A station like KDAL in Duluth, which was outside the blackout radius, had no such trouble showing the Vikings-Steelers game. And it's probably a good thing for The Hollywood Palace that it wasn't on this week; Ed Sullivan has such a star-packed show, the Palace never would have been able to compete. All in all, a good day of TV here in Minnesota.

  1. In 1964, ABC held the rights to broadcast AFL games. However, some NBC affiliates and an independent station also carried the Bills-Chiefs game on this day. These were the days that if no ABC affiliate was in your local broadcasting area, the other stations could run ABC's programming. A year later, NBC would carry the AFL with Curt Gowdy as the lead announcer. NBC's contract, combined with the signing of Joe Namath by the Jets, would eventually take us to January 1969 and the ultimate sports upset---Jets 16, Colts 7. The AFL had arrived.

  2. There was an unfortunate incident late on THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW this week as Jackie Mason, distracted by Sullivan showing him 2 fingers, meaning he had 2 minutes left for his act, made a few gestures back at Sullivan, including perhaps thumbing his nose at him. Sullivan thought Mason gave him "the finger" and profanely chewed him out after the show, banning him for 2 years until Sullivan finally realized he was wrong and had Mason back a few more times after bringing him back on the show in Sept. 1966.

  3. Not having this issue, I found myself surprised by a couple of things:

    - There was Hallmark Hall Of Fame's tab version of The Fantasticks, which as I recall attracted some attention for its all-star cast:

Ricardo Montalban (who wasn't doing much TV at this point) as El Gallo, who begins the play by singing "Try To Remember."
Stanley Holloway and Bert Lahr as the two fathers who fake a feud in order to get their shy offspring to start a romance.
John Davidson (then at the entry level) and Susan Watson (who never left Broadway) as the would-be romantic couple.
I'm guessing (correction welcomed if needed) that this condensed version doesn't include one song that the authors rewrote in recent times, for A Certain Reason …

    - You know, I thought I had another one, but I guess not …

    Better luck next time?

  4. Why I should do things in the right order:

After I posted my as-yet-unmounted first comment, I decided to check YouTube -
    - and lo and behold, there was the HHOF version of The Fantasticks!
Regrettably, It's a crappy B&W kinescope that looks like it was kept in a root cellar for 50+ years … but the point is, the show still exists, and you can watch it and see for yourself, So There Too.
Oh, by the bye, that song I referred to in the first post -
    - the possibly untoward lyrics are not used, but the music stayed as background for a production, So There Too, too.

  5. It's odd that two CBS stations in Duluth and LaCrosse carried "The Fugitive" (which was an ABC show that generally aired on Tuesdays) rather than "My Living Doll" and "Joey Bishop". Meanwhile, the station marked Independent in LaCrosse carried the ABC programming for Sunday while the station marked as ABC carried whatever it wanted on Sundays.

  6. What is "Your Doctor Reports: Again"? Was there a previous "Your Doctor Reports"?

    1. I wondered about that as well. Maybe it's like "Destry Rides Again." Sometimes these listings puzzle me.
