I mentioned the MacLeish-Van Doren dialogs on Saturday, but this really is a strange way it's listed, with the names in lower case and "Dialogs" in all caps. But then, these guys were really smart; maybe they told TV Guide to print it that way.

Frances Farmer happened to be in Indianapolis in 1958, appearing in a play, when an executive with WFBM saw her and thought she'd be a great choice to host the station's upcoming classic movie program. Not only was she the hostess, she also frequently interviewed celebrity visitors to Indianapolis. The show remained on the air until 1964

Brenner is a police drama starring Edward Binns and James Broderick as father-and-son policemen, and though I've never been a fan of either actor, the show is really quite good; I particularly like Binns's performance as an internal affairs cop; it causes me to view his other performances in a different light. The executive producer is Herbert Brodkin, who also did The Defenders and Coronet Blue.

That's quite a lineup on The Lively Ones, isn't it? It's the summer replacement for Hazel, and will run for two summers.

Now this is what I like about a station with multiple affiliations: both ABC and NBC in the morning; ABC in the early afternoon until Loretta Young, then NBC until ABC's American Bandstand; the news with Huntley and Brinkley; and in primetime The Outlaws, Dr. Kildare, and Sing Along with Mitch on NBC, sandwiched around My Three Sons on ABC. If only I could have found something from CBS, we'd have had it made! TV
Bits & Pieces:
ReplyDelete- The Lively Ones caught some notice in its time for a production innovation:
The whole show consisted of outdoor videotaped musical numbers, almost unheard of during this time.
(Especially in color.)
Looking at those guest stars, I noticed three names: Shelly Manne, Gene Krupa, and Louie Bellson, three of the top jazz drummers in the business.
Their Lively Ones number was taped at Dodger Stadium (still referred to as Chavez Ravine at that point); the three drummers were racing around the infield, which was filled with drums of various sizes and shapes - quite a sight (and sound).
The other guests did their numbers at various locations around Southern California; no studio audiences (comes to that, no studios), just the music and the scenery … way ahead of its time.
The Lively Ones was the basis of Ford Motors's ad campaign of that time; Vic Damone was doing their ad spots ("Live it up with the Lively Ones - from Ford!"), so this series was a kind of reward for him.
- When Mark Goodson and Bill Todman were headquartered in NYC, their game shows drew their talent from that city's theater, nightclub, and classical communities.
You'll note that this week, Password is featuring Abe Burrows, who was then in the process of putting together How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying for Broadway (or maybe he already had; I'm unsure of the timeline here -correction welcomed).
- I see from your header grab that the soon-to-depart Frontier Circus is rerunning the guest shot by Irene Dunne, who almost never did TV.
If I recall correctly, this was a "backdoor pilot" for her own Western series, which didn't get picked up; it happened …
