TV Jibe: April Fool!

There's always been a next frontier when it comes to television: from smaller pictures to large, black-and-white to color, analog to HD, 2-D to 3-D. All interesting, to be sure, but what if you could not only see, but smell what you saw on TV? And imagine where that could lead.

That's the idea the BBC had on April 1, 1965—click here to read about one of the great April Fools' hoaxes of all time. And laugh, because we could use it. TV

  1. I remember watching a movie on the Fox network, the last of the "Revenge of the Nerds" series, which did a type of "Aromavision" called "Smell-O-Vision". I had the card from 7-11 which allowed me to "smell" the action. The only smell I remember was to smell lemons just as Joe Bologna was hit with some sort of lemon pie. You can read about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revenge_of_the_Nerds_IV:_Nerds_in_Love

    1. Sorry, I should've said a variation on "Smell-O-Vision" called "Aromavision", as "Smell-O-Vision" is what you described from BBC and "Aromavision" is what Fox used that night.

  2. Can't believe no one's brought this up, but the smellovision pun was used way back in a 1944 Bugs Bunny cartoon, The Old Grey Hare. (Newspaper headline from 2000: "Smellevision Replaces Television. Carl Stalling Sez It'll Never Work!").
