1953 'Infomercials' before sign-off pon channels 7 and 9?
ReplyDelete1953 'informercials' all week long, on every station.
DeleteIn early TV, this was commonplace; this is how the stations filled blank spaces in the schedules - if your company could fill the whole half-hour with a product pitch, and had the cash to pay for the time, go for it!
Saturday morning at 9:30, Channel 4 has a half-hour COMMERCIAL for Charles Antell's line of hair products, whose high lanolin content was responsible for the 'hair-helmet' look that prevailed during the '50s.
I guess you have to be At Least My Age*tm to remember when 'shows' like these were omnipresent in early '50s TV - and we were the least surprised when they made a big comeback when 24/7 TV came along later on.
More later …
When was such advertising banned, before the 'modern age' of infomercials?
ReplyDeleteWhen was such advertising banned … ?
DeleteQuick and easy answer:
NEVER.
'Infomercials' have always been with us in one form or another.
There were periods when they were pushed farther back into fringe time, as that part of the broadcast day gradually increased in duration (see 24/7, above).
If you didn't see them for a while, attribute that to your getting a normal night's sleep most of the time.
The adrenaline junkie who prefers to start their day at the top of an incline and cruise down while getting air over drop offs and other various terrain would benefit the most from a full-face helmet. mountain bike helmets
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of infomercials...
ReplyDelete"TIME TO SMILE" was a brief series Bristol-Myers sponsored on CBS [they pushed Ipana toothpaste on the show] during the first half of 1953 on Sundays at 9:30pm(et). Ken Murray and Alan Young appeared on alternate weeks.
