What's on TV? Wednesday, June 24, 1970

Some very interesting things on the schedule for today. For instance, Merv Griffin's lineup is a classic of the time: Phil Silvers, Shecky Greene, Red Buttons and Charo. That had to be out of control before it even started. And then there's poet James Dickey appearing on Bob Cromie's Book Beat, discussing his first novel. You might have heard of it—Deliverance. And even though I've seen it many times in these old issues, I'm always somewhat taken aback when Mister Rogers' name appears as one word: Misterogers. Makes him sound sort of like a superhero, doesn't it? Well, there's plenty more for you to see down there; this week's listings are from Philadelphia.

  1. That lineup of that David Frost special looks like a mashup of Monty Python, Faulty Towers & the Goodies

    1. This special was part of an overall deal between David Frost and Westinghouse Broadcasting.
When Westinghouse signed Frost to do the daily talk show, he made available to them his considerable inventory of comedy shows that had been playing on British TV for most of the '60s - most of which Frost had godfathered onto the air.
You'll note that KYW in Philadelphia was owned by Westinghouse, which pre-empted Then Came Bronson for the occasion (Bronson did play that night on the rest of the NBC network).
Because this special didn't air in Chicago (no Westinghouse station in town), I never got to see it; sight unseen I'm guessing that much of the content was recycled from shows Frost produced in Britain not long before (correction welcomed if needed).

    2. I believe that's probably a film called "How to Irritate People," which was written by Cleese, Chapman, Brooke-Taylor, and Marty Feldman and co-starred Michael Palin and Connie Booth. Frost was listed as the producer. It's been a while since I've seen it so I don't know if he appears in it. As best I can tell, it was edited for American TV, but this looks like it's the whole thing, as seen in the UK: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipdPFoIzFi0

    3. I have a copy of How to Irritate People, which did come out on DVD. It's almost, but not quite up to the level of Monty Python

  2. 1. Judging by the guest list, that day's Today Show may have originated in Chicago. 2. Charlie Pride fans may have lucked out on this night, Hee Haw at 7:30, then Johnny Cash at 9:00. 3. On that "Soul" listing, that is indeed Whitney Houston's mom.

  3. I just had to explain in 2 different Facebook posts that "Hillbillies" was posted as is was just for TVG purposes, not because of syndication, you also notice that that they do the same for "Humperdinck" in IDing "Englebert Humperdinck"

    1. This is close to the time when, starting in its 9th & last season this coming fall, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES dropped "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" and went right to an announcer reading the show's title, then the starring actors were introduced. Raymond Bailey & Nancy Kulp were promoted to the opening credits starting in Season 7.

  4. As long as I'm in the neighborhood:

    - It Takes Two was a celebrity husband-and-wife game, hosted by Vin Scully.
This was a sort-of descendant of an earlier NBC game called I'll Bet (not a Goodson-Todman show, like the similar He Said-She Said/Tattletales, which came later - and that's another story).
The listing only mentions the celeb husbands, so here's an FYI:
Jim Backus's wife was his longtime comedy partner, Henny Backus.
Jack Cassidy's wife was Shirley Jones, who was just about to start work on The Partridge Family.
Gary Lockwood's wife was Stefanie Powers, who was appearing on every TV drama in sight that year; Lockwood was just coming off 2001: A Space Odyssey, which made him the better-known one at the time.

    - Someone mentioned Hee Haw, so I thought I'd throw this in, although I probably should have in the previous post:
Frank Peppiatt and John Aylesworth, the Canadian comedy writer-producers of Hee-Haw, performed those same functions on Happy Days, the '30s nostalgia variety show you mentioned last time.
Peppiatt and Aylesworth used the same production method on both shows: they would do each of the regular comedy segments all at once, then cut-and-paste them into the thirteen separate episodes as needed.
The musical numbers were done the same way: the various singers spent a day's worth of studio time singing their old hits before an assembled audience, after which the editors would separate them out into individual shows.
One thing you didn't mention last time: the comedy segments included Jim MacGeorge and Chuck McCann doing their classic Laurel & Hardy skits, and Julie McWhirter (Dees) did a spot-on Gracie Allen (I don't recall who they had doing George Burns).
And a guy named Bill Oberlin really did W.C. Fields: he was a physical dead-ringer, and had the voice down as well.
Bill Oberlin was a set-designer by trade; doing Fields was a profitable sideline for him, here and in commercials (One time I remember one of those spots airing on Dick Cavett's show; as they were coming out of the spot, Cavett asked aloud "Can we get that guy on the show?").
