What's on TV? Tuesday, August 4, 1964

President Johnson's speech on the Gulf of Tonkin crisis interrupted regular programming at 10:36 p.m. CT. The Tonight Show episode guide notes the event with a nonchalance that belies its importance: "This episode was interrupted for an address by President Lyndon Johnson over the Gulf of Tonkin incident." On to more pleasant memories; the "Theater Opening" on WTCN is that of the new Southtown Theater at the Southtown shopping center in Bloomington. I saw many movies at that theater over the years; I think the last one might have been Quiz Show. It was torn down 25 years ago now, a foolish move by a shopping center that isn't what it used to be. But then, we've made more than a few foolish decisions around here over the years.

  1. 2 months before I was born! I always enjoy context as far as my early years go....
I have a question you may have answered before so I apologize for that in advance.
How did it work with TV stations sharing content from 2 networks? How was it decided which shows were to be broadcast? And why was it done in the first place?

  2. As I understand it, if a broadcast market had fewer than 3 commercial stations, 1 or both stations could affiliate w/ multiple networks. Usually in earlier days, ABC would end up the odd network out, since it generally had lower ratings than the other networks. I however experienced NBC being the odd network out when I was in Waco, TX in 1984. The previous CBS affiliate went full time to CBS, dropping ABC's prime time programming. The former NBC affiliate went to ABC sometime in mid-1984, leaving NBC w/o any affiliate in the Waco/Temple, TX. This was when THE COSBY SHOW premiered, and we were unable to see it anywhere. A new NBC affiliate on UHF went on the air the next spring 1985. By the end of 1985, the former NBC affiliate went back to NBC and the UHF station went to ABC. The station affiliations haven't been changed since then, and later another UHF station went on the air to become a Fox affiliate.

  3. A number of NBC affiliates switched to ABC around 1977-79, when ABC topped the ratings and NBC was stumbling through the Fred Silverman era. But some of those defectors returned to NBC a few years later, which makes it odd that anyone in 1984 would have wanted to drop NBC.
